Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

Historia
Long overshadowed by Japan and China, South Korea is a small country that happens to be one of the great national success stories of the postwar period. From a failed state with no democratic tradition, ruined and partitioned by war, and sapped by a half-century of colonial rule, South Korea transformed itself in just 50 years into an economic powerhouse and a democracy that serves as a model for other countries. With no natural resources and a tradition of authoritarian rule, Korea managed to accomplish a second Asian miracle.

Chronicles the beginning and the respective members’ musical influences, through the sad destructive influence of excessive drugs and alcohol. The actual music still remains a mystery. They were genius. Sad that so much violence and destruction followed them around. Hopefully the remaining members have mellowed and wised up with time.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Lovely Narration
Revisado: 03-13-24
The author’s narration and voice felt intimate and soothing. Even though this is a memoir about her mother, I was struck by how well her father provided for her and her mother. Maybe it wasn’t a monogamous marriage, but there are hints that he loved, he felt, he was there for them in substantial ways.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Historia
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that states, "Two tigers cannot share the same mountain." However, in East Asia, there are three tigers on that mountain: China, Japan, and Korea, and they have a long history of turmoil and tension with each other. In his latest entertaining and thought-provoking narrative travelogue, Michael Booth sets out to discover how deep, really, the enmity is between these three "tiger" nations and what prevents them from making peace.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Poignant & masterfully presented story that speaks the truth
Revisado: 03-20-23
This story has poignant moments and speaks the truth. It shows the complexities and ironies of contemporary race issues. The characters are complex. I don’t understand why this book would be banned. It should be required reading. Maybe it just hits the nail on the head too accurately for some. The cuss words are part of the realistic character dialogue. If you haven’t ever used any of these words yourself, you’re the exception and not the rule. Oscar-worthy performance by the narrator, Bahni Turpin.

Beautiful and Touching Story
Revisado: 03-05-23
Beautiful story with so much wisdom. Well-written and well-narrated. Introduced me to the rich history and art of Korean celadon pottery. I’ve always loved that color. I didn’t know it was a thing of cultural significance in Korea. I searched online and found a picture of the crane vase. It’s amazing that people were able to create this 800-900 years ago.

Historia
This landmark biography penetrates the barriers of legend to bring to full and intimate life a man whose burning passions - for painting, women, and ideas - were matched by a compulsion to invent reality in his life no less than in his art. Here is the tragic story of a man who, from his teenage passion for a gypsy boy to the chilling bitterness and betrayals of his old age, was unable to love and was driven to dominate and humiliate the women - and men - who fell under his hypnotic spell.

Gives an overview of Picasso’s life
Revisado: 02-27-22
This gives a birth to death overview of Picasso’s life. A portion of the book seems to be a watered-down retelling of Françoise Gilot’s “Life with Picasso.” The rest of the book does cover other time periods though. I was saddened to learn about Drancy and Max Jacob’s death there. Interesting to learn the different historical and political contexts that Picasso lived in. The narrator is a bit grating but she gets the job done.

Historia
Life with Picasso, written with Carlton Lake, is about Picasso the artist and Picasso the man. We hear him talking about painting and sculpture, his life, his career, as well as other artists, both contemporaries and old masters. We glimpse Picasso in his many and volatile moods, dismissing his work, exultant over his work, entertaining his various superstitions, being an anxious father. But Life with Picasso is not only a portrait of a great artist; it is also a picture of a talented young woman of exacting intelligence at the outset of her own notable career.

Candid memoir told with humor
Revisado: 02-27-22
Gilot’s memoir remains fresh and relevant today. Her narrative shares a first-hand glimpse of Picasso the human. Her voice is insightful and wise. The audio production and narration has some idiosyncratic pronunciations but I felt that Mary Sarah’s different timbres drew me in.
