Not PC but very insightful
Revisado: 08-01-22
Excellent book! The insights about associative thinking and how she got where she is through the back door were really enlightening to me as an educator. The in depth discussion of livestock ethics and spiritually at the end were fascinating to me as a human being! The terminology made me bristle a bit at first since I’m used to “neurotypical” being used instead of her choice, “normal” and terms like “handicapped” or “severely afflicted with autism” are very taboo with the population I serve. I’m glad I didn’t let that stop me from listening though!

Barnabas Piper unpacks what faith really means. He shows how embracing doubts and questions can help us to get to know God and encourages us to risk trusting God in our everyday lives, even when we don’t understand everything about him. This book will encourage Christians seeking to ask questions in a godly way and will give them confidence to trust God, even when some questions remain.

Excellent but repetitive
Revisado: 07-19-22
I experienced a total mindset shift from the first 3 chapters in regards to how I approach my unanswered spiritual questions. I am incredibly greatful! However the book became repetitive as it dragged to the end. The same things could’ve been said in half the space.

Neither "everything's fine" nor "burn it all down", Stringer offers a thoughtful appreciation of evangelicalism's history, identity, and strengths, but also lament for its blind spots, toxic brokenness, and complicity with injustice. From this complicated space, we can move forward with informed vision rather than resignation and with hope for our future together.

Enjoyable, global, enlightening
Revisado: 06-15-22
As a southern Baptist who has never lived more than 3hrs from where I was born, I really appreciated his broad and diverse treatment of global evangelicalism. It increased both my self-awareness and understanding of Christianity as a whole. It’s easy to think of my theology as the default but that is not the case. This is an enjoyable personal story and a helpful guide for anyone who is processing their personal faith in light of failings within the larger church.

Unique and captivating
Revisado: 01-18-22
While I think some of his conclusions were a bit overstated and this isn’t a book that contains the final, conclusive proof that will stump unbelievers… it was a wonderful read! It was read with great energy and the “fuse and fall out” framework was really unique. I learned a lot about the wide reaching influence of Jesus in human history and his uniqueness among all other religious leaders. The modern cold case homicide story woven in really captivated my attention. This is really a great read for people interested in religion, human history and clue-hunting.

Historia
As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events - his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible - that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance. But more than just a memoir, Torn provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members - or who struggle with their own sexuality.

Side B Christian
Revisado: 06-23-21
This was the 4th book I listened to this Pride month on the topic of gay Christians and the most compelling. I am side B (believing that gender difference is essential to the core meaning of marriage and God’s design for sex) and was dreading reading more flimsy arguments against the “clobber verses” but your “stance” on that issue was barely 10% of the book’s content. What I got in this book was a compelling memoir from someone with an enviably deep faith and a heartbreaking story that ended with an open minded and hopeful path forward. I too looked to Exodus for answers and used the “love the sinner/hate the sin” approach. Your story will forever change how I approach LBGT people and I will be recommending it to all my friends.

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Reading as a complimentarian
Revisado: 06-05-21
I was ready to throw the book out after the first chapter but I’m so glad I kept reading! This filled in so many gaps in my understanding of church history and I loved hearing the stories of how women lived out their faith in the different points in history she referenced. It was really eye opening to see how the question on women in ministry has been addressed so differently throughout history and the key passages concerning it have more than one possible interpretation. She inspired me to look more deeply into biblical womanhood. However her claim that inerrancy as a doctrine was created for women’s subordination kind of negates the whole argument of her book that a plain reading of scripture doesn’t command women’s subordination. Her personal stories were helpful in understanding what would turn a Christian away from complementarianism and gave me a greater respect for those who hold the egalitarian position.

Historia
In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could?

Beautiful Memoir
Revisado: 02-05-19
I loved hearing Jackie's story read with much of the imagery and cadence that characterizes her spoken word pieces. Her unapologetically real account of her journey, warts and all, is much needed as LGBT issues continue to have a prominent place in our society. She has a very high view of God and glorifies him well through this account. However, I did struggle at times to follow her train of thought when she deviated from the chronological structure. I also found the jump from her wedding day to a theological discourse abrupt. The last few chapters dragged on as they were quite repetitive. Overall, I found her testimony moving and her insights (particularly about the heterosexual gospel) valuable.

Based more on experience than biblical teaching
Revisado: 12-18-18
I enjoyed hearing Joyce talk about her personal experience with confidence, however it was repetitive and her discussion of many of the Bible passages she quoted was shallow. I learned a lot more about Joyce than I did about the Bible or confidence in general.
