Historia
Jack Parker knows all too well how treacherous turn-of-the-century East Texas can be. His parents did not survive a smallpox epidemic. His grandfather was murdered. Now his sister Lula has been kidnapped by a criminal who may believe wearing a dead man's clothes protects them both from death. With bounty hunter Shorty, a charismatic and cunning dwarf, and Eustace, a gravedigging son of an ex-slave, the heartbroken young Jack sets off on an epic quest to rescue his sister from the corrupt men who control much of the new territory.

Great reading, wonderful story
Revisado: 08-22-24
One of Lansdale’s best. Great narrator as well. Can’t wait to see the film based on the book. Lansdale knows how to turn a phrase and pull the heartstrings. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
It is 1990 when Melvina Donleavy arrives in Soviet Belarus on her first undercover mission with the CIA, alongside three fellow agents—none of whom know she is playing two roles. To the prying eyes of the KGB, she is merely a secretary; to her CIA minders, she is the only one who can stop the flow of nuclear weapons from the crumbling Soviet Union into the Middle East. For Mel has a secret; she is a “super recognizer,” someone who never forgets a face. But no training could prepare her for the reality of life undercover, and for the streets of Minsk.

Historia
The instant New York Times best seller. In the summer of 1989, a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom, is rocked by a violent crime when 15-year-old Lindy Simpson - free spirit, track star, and belle of the block - is attacked late one evening near her home. As the dark side of this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia is revealed, the close-knit neighborhood is irreversibly transformed.

I wanted to love this
Revisado: 10-29-22
Definitely more coming of age than mystery, which is fine, and there are some moments that are nostalgic and lovely, but overwhelmingly this did nothing for me. I would read other things of this author, as he’s clearly working his way into his craft, but I would not do so in a hurry. I wanted to stop reading this book about a third in, but I kept waiting for more which never came. It all feels very surface, and the main character was not really likable. I also can see how this might connect with a younger reader, more YA than adult. The narration performance was excellent.
