Historia
In this sweeping, deeply researched book, Paul Thomas Chamberlin boldly argues that the Cold War, long viewed as a mostly peaceful, if tense, diplomatic standoff between democracy and communism, was actually a part of a vast, deadly conflict that killed millions on battlegrounds across the postcolonial world. For half a century, as an uneasy peace hung over Europe, ferocious proxy wars raged in the Cold War’s killing fields, resulting in more than 14 million dead - victims who remain largely forgotten and all but lost to history.

Excellent narration of a great story!
Revisado: 12-06-24
I've listened to Grover Gardner before on Audible, and he does a fantastic job here in narrating the tale of Cold War-era conflict. The writing and research that went into this are also superb, and I recommend this highly to anyone interested in learning more about the role of political violence in the second half of the 20th century.

How would Saturn’s rings look from a spaceship sailing just above them? If you were falling into a black hole, what’s the last thing you’d see before your spaghettification? What would it be like to visit the faraway places we currently experience only through high-powered telescopes and robotic emissaries? Faster-than-light travel may never be invented, but we can still take the scenic route through the universe with renowned astronomer and science communicator Philip Plait.

Les Johnson takes you on a thrilling tour of the physics and technologies that may enable us to reach the stars. He discusses the latest exoplanet discoveries, promising interstellar missions on the not-so-distant horizon, and exciting new developments in space propulsion, power, robotics, communications, and more. But interstellar travel will not be easy, and it is not for the faint of heart. Johnson describes the harsh and forbidding expanse of space that awaits us, and he addresses the daunting challenges that we need to overcome in order to realize tomorrow's possibilities.

An excellent look at the realities of star travel!
Revisado: 11-15-22
Wow, this really blew me away - despite its relative brevity, this book outlines the essential details and facts of what travel to the stars might entail, from the immense distances involved to the technologies necessary to cross them. There is even a nicely detailed section on the speculative fiction which has addressed the issue of travel to other stars, including more fictional and less feasible techniques to those more grounded in scientific fact.
Furthermore, the performance is a true benefit to the work, as the narrator consistently delivers the story in clear, eloquent tone and voice, and elevates even the more mundane statistical data points to thoroughly enjoyable prose.
All in all, I very much recommend this book to anyone even tangentially interested in the concept of interstellar travel, in the technical abilities required to make it happen, or who has otherwise been fascinated by fictional accounts of star travel after the fashion of "Star Trek" and the other stories which Johnson references herein. This book truly does them all justice!

I really enjoyed this listen, as it had a little something to cover all the bases: humor and wonder in abundance, science and speculation in just the right balance, and a great performance by the narrator...as someone obsessed with space futurism, this had me hanging on every word

Historia
When smart-aleck, down-on-his-luck bounty hunter Anderson Gunn snags his next job, he’s just happy to get the gig. The target he’s chasing may be wanted for murder, but his bills aren’t going to pay themselves. As it turns out, he probably should've been more selective. When he tracks down Cameron Kovak, the wanted man turns out to be no man at all. Gunn finds himself face to face with a tentacled creature out of Ridley Scott’s worst nightmare - a baby Cthulhu, wearing his target's skin like a onesie. And that's just the start of it.

A Funny and Fantastic Action Comedy
Revisado: 12-20-20
This book has a lot to offer: thrills, laughs, heady ideas, and an engrossing world, all in one readily accessible and easily digestible package. The characters, especially main guy Anderson, are likable, unique, and interesting, and the author weaves them together in a tale that both keeps you rapt all the way through, but also leaves you hungry for the next step in the series. On top of all that, the narrator does a fantastic job bringing it all to life, breathing the characters into being in a manner befitting their rich identities...I definitely recommend this book

Tour de force of emotion that's well needed
Revisado: 12-20-20
What can I say? I came because I wanted to hear President Obama narrate the story of his life and his time in office, and I was not disappointed. This book delivers all it advertises and then some, with raw emotion, triumph, and poignancy all in equal measure, especially for those of us who frankly look back on the normalcy of his 8 years in office with fondness...if you, too, want to look back on that time, with the man himself guiding your tour, this is the book for you

Historia
Where is the best place to find life beyond Earth? We often look to Mars as the most promising site in our solar system, but recent scientific missions have revealed that some of the most habitable real estate may actually lie farther away. Beneath the frozen crusts of several of the small, ice-covered moons of Jupiter and Saturn lurk vast oceans that may have been in existence for as long as Earth, and together may contain more than 50 times its total volume of liquid water. Could there be organisms living in their depths?

A thorough look into the search for life
Revisado: 11-02-20
This book has a little bit of everything: scientific rhetoric, postulation, history, anecdotes, and above all weaves them together to make an intricate look into the always cutting-edge field of astrobiology, in this case relating to the study of oceans on faraway worlds & moons
The only complaint I have, and it is very minor, is that the narrator is a little bland from time to time, or perhaps more accurately lapses into cliches of performance that detract from the quality of the performance (which is altogether quite forgivable given that he's also the author, and therefore a scientist by trade!)
Altogether I still rate this book very highly, and I recommend it to anyone passionate about the search for life beyond Earth, the science behind our probing of distant ocean worlds, or who simply wants to take part in a short excursion into the next realm of space exploration

Great Version of My Favorite in the Series
Revisado: 10-23-20
Well, as I'm sure most people checking this review have probably listened to the previous five books before coming this far, there's not much new to say, other than WOW
As with the other audio versions of the Potter books here on Audible, this one has excellent narration, and the story itself holds up brilliantly even after all these years... really takes you back to the good old days
All in all, I definitely recommend this version to both old fans and new alike!

Since the beginning of human history Mars has been an alluring dream - the stuff of legends, gods, and mystery. The planet most like ours, it has still been thought impossible to reach, let alone explore and inhabit. Now with the advent of a revolutionary new plan, all this has changed. Leading space exploration authority Robert Zubrin has crafted a daring new blueprint, Mars Direct, presented here with engaging anecdotes. The Case for Mars is not a vision for the far future or one that will cost us impossible billions.

A Soaring Look Ahead
Revisado: 10-22-20
I actually listened to Zubrin's more recent book, "The Case for Space", before finishing this one, and I must say they offer a great one-two punch of both astronautical science and enthusiasm for the human future in the high frontier
While there is a bit of content overlap between both books, this one lays down a lot of groundwork that makes the more recent volume more potent, and furthermore really explains, well, the case for Mars, in exquisite detail
The narration is excellent, especially for a work of this type, and really helps make the listen interesting and engaging... all in all I highly recommend this book to all space enthusiasts

Exciting and Invigorating Call to Action
Revisado: 10-21-20
Does this book have excellent technical descriptions of the means by which we'll one day (hopefully soon) travel to and settle the solar system and those beyond it? Yes, and the sections explaining this topic are exquisite
But the book really shines when Zubrin offers his thoughts on WHY this is not merely a novelty or a hobbyist idea, but a necessity for the future of humanity
On top of that, the narration is superb, and the narrator's voice is clear and seems to exude the same optimism and enthusiasm evident in Zubrin's text...I HIGHLY recommend this to all lovers of the space sector!
