I always appreciate learning the behind-the-scenes stories about things I'm interested in. It's interesting to note the differences between what the author (and the people involved) say what happened in certain instances versus the public stories we've heard up until now.

I did enjoy this, for the most part, but was surprised that there was no mention of the Rankin/Bass THE HOBBIT or THE RETURN OF THE KING early on in the book. I soon found out why in the later chapters, because it's clear the author had no love, at all, for anything Rankin/Bass created in Middle Earth. Were they perfect adaptations? No. But to dismiss them altogether because of their cartoonish nature totally dismisses the fans who came to Middle Earth via a path other than the books. And though many of actors and creators didn't have encyclopedic knowledge of every iteration of LotR or THE HOBBIT doesn't negate the fact that there are a lot of similarities with Rankin/Bass's productions and Jackson's; specifically, Andy Serkis's Gollum and the R/B Gollum move and sound very similar.

As for the narration, I was disappointed in the numerous mispronunciations of names and places, Considering how many different sources there are for that, including previous audiobook versions of LotR, it's frustrating that the producer, publisher, and narrator couldn't be bothered to get that right.

What happens when you are approached by beings claiming to be aliens who are insisting a worse alien race may be looking to invade Earth?

Janissaries follows a Lieutenant Shawn “Calvin” Hobbes, two years after successfully defending the US from the Chinese invasion, after he’s approached by aliens who want the humans’ help getting home. Along the way, they find out some unusual secrets about human history, and how some myths and historic events may have ACTUALLY happened.

A great start to a mil sci-fi series that I’m looking forward to diving further into. I definitely recommend it.

This dramatization is a perfect blend of Jeff Wayne's musical melodrama and the original War of the Worlds book. The use of the certain themes to characterize the tone of scenes is perfect. It lets you know who the main character is encountering without having to constantly tell the reader. And, of course, Jeff Wayne's music has always been great!

Even if you're not a fan of dramatized books (I'm certainly not) give this one a try!

The overall story is excellent, however the addition of music at odd points in the story are distracting.
