I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

The pure evil under the surface
Revisado: 11-28-24
I liked the peek inside the heads of Nina and Millie. The story had twists and turns.
I thought Millie made choices that were unlikely in the wake of what she thought she knew.

Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

History on the rocks, not straight up
Revisado: 07-03-23
I read the book, Trinity, many years ago. I enjoy almost anything about Ireland.
This book made history real as seen by the people who lived it.
The emotions and facts worked magic.

Another way people can judge each other
Revisado: 06-21-23
It was hard to stay engaged because I did not want to deal with another reason for people to distrust each other. The good news is that by the end, we saw examples of the goodness in people.

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

It felt like the movie, Groundhog Day
Revisado: 01-22-23
On the positive side, I appreciated the lyrical writing style. Metaphors and descriptions helped me “see” the surroundings and feel the feelings.
After a third of the book, I skipped to the end to learn about Henry’s fate.
I wish I could have just read the chapters about the two of them after I got the gist of Addie’s history.
It is rare that I do not finish a book.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Real emotions and real courage
Revisado: 02-06-22
It’s been a long time since I cried as a book neared the end. And this book drew tears. I fell in love the characters and the bookshop.
The descriptions of the horrendous bombings on London by the Germans made my heart ache. The courage and resilience of the Londoners
Renewed my faith in humanity.

Lots of twists and turns
Revisado: 11-03-21
The best part of this book is the lesson about judging people without knowing what led them to where they are. The depth of probing into many of the characters lives kept me interested.
This book is lower on my list than others. I found the narrator’s voice to be high pitched and a bit grating to my ear. However, her voice was expressive.
The quick movement from one character to the next caused me some confusion.

Historia
Desperate to escape from London, single mother Zoe wants to build a new life for herself and her four-year-old son Hari. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where shouting football fans keep them awake all night. Hari’s dad, Jaz, a charismatic but perpetually broke DJ, is no help at all. But his sister, Surinder, comes to Zoe’s aid, hooking her up with a job as far away from the urban crush as possible: a bookshop on the banks of Loch Ness. And there’s a second job to cover housing: Zoe will be an au pair at a castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

The background noise was both enhancing and irritating. From time to time I got the characters confused. On the other hand, I enjoyed revisiting this story of a way of life long gone and of the blooming of personal self awareness
