Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

A stunning and insightful look into the traumatized mind
Revisado: 01-06-25
This title is a must-read for anyone who has experienced trauma, or has a loved one struggling with PTSD. Van Der Kolk 's writing is incredibly well-written with years of experience and study to back it up, and yet remains accessible to readers who do not have experience with scientific tests. Overall, I cannot recommend this title enough.

Historia
Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

A Classic
Revisado: 12-16-22
While there are some portions that have perhaps not aged quite well, this still holds up as a Jules Verne classic.

Historia
An underground classic, Crash explores the disturbing potentialities of contemporary society's increasing dependence on technology as intermediary in human relations. In this hallucinatory novel, the car provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a "TV scientist" turned "nightmare angel of the highways", experiments with erotic atrocities among auto crash victims, each more sinister then the last.

Shock value...and little else
Revisado: 03-03-21
After the initial interest and peculiarity of chapter one, the story becomes progressively more bland. I'm not certain how one can make a car accident fetishist boring, but here we are. For a better grotesque read, try Geek Love.

Historia
"You have two days to pass your audition. You better pass it, feller. You’re joining the circus. Ain’t that the best news you ever got?" Delivered by a trio of psychotic clowns, this ultimatum plunges Jamie into the horrific alternate universe that is the centuries-old Pilo Family Circus, a borderline world between Hell and Earth from which humankind’s greatest tragedies have been perpetrated. Yet in this place - peopled by the gruesome, grotesque, and monstrous - where violence and savagery are the norm, Jamie finds that his worst enemy is himself.

Deliciously vulgar, but quite well written.
Revisado: 12-28-18
Coaxes many an emotion, and no shortage of laughter. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but a good read for anyone who's up for a bit of adventure. My only complaint is with the narrator, who is just a tad bland and chooses a guttural elderly voice for a good half of the characters.
