I love Loretta Chase books but even Kate Reading couldn’t save this one. Seems like she wrote herself into a corner with these characters in the first two books in the series, which are excellent, but couldn’t find an interesting way out of it. Feels like she copied bits and pieces from the first two stories and cobbled together this uninteresting story with no tension, no real plot and no real romance. Very disappointing. Sorry, hate to write a negative review on a book written by an author I truly appreciate.

Good but heavy

Well written, like all Abby J. Books. It’s sweet and at times, VERY funny. All of her books have some serious elements but this one is a bit too heavy at times, especially the second half of the book. I’m generally okay with it but the heavy parts of this one were really rough for me and seemed to drag on to the point where I couldn’t enjoy the story. Sometimes AJ goes over and over the same theme and I felt my sympathy for the characters turn to frustration and just way too much “sad”. Just my opinion.

Really irritating

I have loved all the previous books. This one, no.
Hate the whole church cult premise. Felt like it was an invention to keep Strike and Robin apart for a good part of the story. But I don’t find it interesting unless they are really working together. Content is so disturbing at times and the book is overlong as has been the case with the last few books.
Of course Strike and Robin’s personal story drags on with very little advancement. Hate the cliffhanger ending b.s.
I just didn’t enjoy this one. I always go back and listen to these books many times after I’ve finished—this one I won’t… so I feel cheated in a way.
Narrator was perfection as always.

Seriously hate this book. Predictable and depressing.
Female narrator wasn’t great. When you indulge in these impossible unrealistic romances, the best least the author should do is deliver the expected ridiculous happy ending.

Author’s other books are better. This one is tedious. Characters keep having the same conversation over and over. Then a traumatic death is thrown in just to mix it up a bit. Female narrator needed a hard smack so she’d stop whining. Actually skipped ahead a few times - and I never do that.

Really like this author generally. I liked aspects of this book as well but didn’t really feel the connection between main characters. Could be performance— Mary Jane Wells is a fantastic narrator but the accent for Alan was too high and snooty sounding, and the accent for Nina too working class. Just made the plot even more unbelievable.

I so enjoyed the first 4 books in this series but the last 2 are terrible! WTH! This one the worst by far. So boring, so many bad accents, absurd storyline. If you’re out of ideas for Veronica and Stoker, maybe it’s best to end this series. And what’s happened to Stoker? He seems completely superfluous in these last books. I’m done.
