In the face of beatings, kidnappings, and lynchings by vigilantes, company detectives, and hired guns, the Wobblies organized in mining and lumber camps, the wheat fields, on docksides and in textile factories.

Sad but vital piece of history.

The US government locks up union men, union men in prison are betrayed by their union when they attempt to negotiate their own release.
This slice of history is one that is skimmed over in most books, but is vital to setting the stage for modern union and labor movements. The whole thing is letters though, so you only have those points of view.
