Vintage Ashe. Emotional, brutal, and beautiful. As always, the writing has such a rich undercurrent, but the cherry on top is the selection of J.F. Harding as narrator. Just incredible.

‘The Night Of’ is not only one of the best books I read and listened to in 2021, but in many years. The story is well-plotted, fast-paced, and believable. The relationship ‘drama’ between Secret Service Agent Avery and Vice President Sharp is completely believable and handled with incredible deftness by Mr. Bauer. Not once did the story or situations feel heavy-handed or contrived. The narration by Mr. Solo is top notch. Once again he does not disappoint. Neither does Mr. Bauer. Romantic suspense and story-telling at its very best.

This review is based on only the first book, which only works if you're able to suspend all belief at a major plot point in the beginning of the book. I was unable to do so, and therefore the outcome of the book didn't work for me. There are some great characters in this series and some of the plot of book one was outstanding, but ultimately it suffers from a lazy and unimaginative author. These characters deserve so much better than Jeff Carson.

Never have I ever wanted to love a book as much as I wanted to love 'Pretty Pretty Boys.' It came so highly recommended, and I'm a huge fan of the narrator. However, the author ruined the story for me in the last chapter with his contrived twists and turns.

In Other Words, The One Where Christopher Holmes Grows Up.

This is the fourth book in the series and, much like a fine wine, the series has improved with age. And that’s the nice thing about a series: the author has the time and luxury to let the characters mature and learn and just be.

The story takes place four months after the events of ‘The Boy With the Painful Tattoo’ and we find Christopher Holmes and J.X. Moriarity enjoying domestic bliss. Of course, that comes to a screeching halt when Christopher gets a call from his ex David informing him that a body has been discovered in the backyard of his former home in Los Angeles. To make matters worse, David suggests the body is Christopher’s former assistant (who David ran off with) and accuses him of killing him.

The cops soon appear and Christopher, once again, finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation. The difference here, is this isn’t his first rodeo and he’s actually been paying attention.

The book is well-plotted and well-paced and there are some surprising (and pleasing) twists and turns in the relationship between Kit and J.X. We’re treated to the hilarous insanity that is Rachel Ving and we also see the return of an old frenemy.

Lanyon (as usual) is at the top of her game with punchy dialogue, most notably Kit’s withering self-assessments and witty asides. Of course, J.X. gets his licks and quips in, too. However, the real revelation is Kit’s newfound self-awareness and restraint. I found the book to be eminently satisfying.

But the star here is narrator Kevin R. Free, who turns in another bravura performance, as he seamlessly switches between the distinct voices of Kit, J.X., and Rachel (as well as the entire cast of characters). He doesn't miss a beat as he brings each line of Lanyon's fantastic dialogue alive.

I have to admit that while I was drawn in by the cover, it was the book's blurb that really did it for me:

"Will a bitter bite from the past spoil a sweet romance?

Tristan Love, the youngest of seven brothers, is back in his hometown. He’s left the New York food scene and an abusive relationship behind him, but he holds his love of French pastries close to his heart and is determined to put his skills to use in a bakery of his own.

Returning to his childhood home means his meddlesome brother Simon will butt into his business, but before the bakery even opens its doors, Tristan’s delectable creations have the town’s mouths watering, and Jake, a cute mechanic, asks Tristan out. It all seems worthwhile….

That is, until the bakery burns down, Jake’s criminal past comes to light, and Tristan’s nasty ex rears his head where he is decidedly not wanted."

Tristan, for everything he's gone through in the past, is a relentlessly positive person who returns to his hometown of Lake Balmoral to start fresh after leaving his fiance in New York. Jake is a guy who's quietly trying to rebuild his life, making his way one day at a time. While it seems like Tristan and Jake get together pretty fast (and they do), the reader needs to keep in mind that this is a Dreamspun Desire book, which is pretty much the equivalent of a Harlequin Romance. And that's not a bad thing. The story is full of interesting and engaging secondary characters, and the narrator (Simon Ferrar) does an exceptional job of bringing them to life. His voices for Tristan and Jake are especially fitting to the characters.

I'm a big fan of the Dreamspun Desires line at Dreamspinner Press, and since 'Sweet Nothings' is billed as Book 1 in the Amuse Bouche series, I'm definitely looking forward to more stories of life in Lake Balmoral.

To sum it up, ‘Sweet Nothings’ is a story of starting over and of giving those who never had one - or who thought they never deserved one - a second chance. And that’s something.

Where does Cronin's Key rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

While it's not the best book - storywise - I've ever listened to, it's near the top. However, of audiobooks I've listened to, if it's not the best, it's in the top three.

What did you like best about this story?

Incredible world building! It was seamless and utterly believable that the elements of this story could take place today.

What about Joel Leslie’s performance did you like?

The amazing range he has. There are so many characters in this book in addition to the two leads, and Joel voices each of them distinctly. From Scottish to Japanese, he nails them all.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, and that's not in a bad way. I think it took me days to get through this book because there were times when I stopped the audio just to savor how good it was and to let it sink in.

Any additional comments?

If you want a well-written and well-paced story and are afraid to dip your toe into the world of audiobooks, you won't find a better jump off point than this.

Would you consider the audio edition of Out of Nowhere to be better than the print version?

With no disrespect at all to the author (Roan Parrish is a rock star), Spencer Goss's narration of 'Out of Nowhere' elevates an already brilliant book to another level.

What other book might you compare Out of Nowhere to and why?

I would compare this book to 'Shattered Glass' by Dani Alexander, which is one of my all time favorite books.

What about Spencer Goss’s performance did you like?

Um... EVERY THING! Spencer breathes individual life into each character he voices, whether it be a lead of a minor character. Nothing is throw away. His narration is reminiscent of 'old time' radio shows. It's as if he is acting out the story.

If you could take any character from Out of Nowhere out to dinner, who would it be and why?

It's a toss up between Colin and Daniel. I fell in love with the character of Daniel while reading and listening to 'In the Middle of Somewhere' and admire his tenacity and positive spirit. Colin broke my heart. I knew there was something more to him and am so glad Roan Parrish told his story.

Any additional comments?

This is the second book Spencer Goss has voiced and I'm blown away by his talent and attention to every detail. I'm going to go on the record right here to say you will not find a finer performance of an audio book anywhere.

Would you listen to Fish Stick Fridays again? Why?

Absolutely! In addition to a great story line and compelling, flawed but strong characters, the real revelation is Spencer Goss and his narration. Listening to a good book performed by a good narrator adds both depth and richness to the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fish Stick Fridays?

There's a pivotal scene about halfway through the story where Deacon Reid and his 8-year old niece have a phone conversation that, on the page, is emotional enough. Hearing it performed is intense.

What does Spencer Goss bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ha! Spencer Goss brings these characters alive. His Zig is spot on, but it's really the voice of Deacon that seals the deal for me. Deacon is written as a strong, down to earth man, but Spencer breathes life into his words and Deacon comes across as 'sex on a stick.' He's a character everybody wants to know.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Rule #1: Don't be an A$$hole.

Any additional comments?

Rhys Ford is on a very short list of authors I will auto buy, whether print books, ebooks or audio books. This book was a bit out of her normal 'wheelhouse', so to speak, but she knocked it out of the park. It's really fantastic storytelling.

What made the experience of listening to In From the Cold: The I Spy Stories the most enjoyable?

Alexander J. Masters brings the story to life like no other book narrator I've ever heard. I was reminded of old radio shows when the performers acted out the parts. His voice, his inflections, his accents, his inner dialogue... perfection.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In From the Cold: The I Spy Stories?

The ending of the first book - the home invasion and the defending of hearth and home - is both action-packed and tender.

Which scene was your favorite?

Hard to say what scene was my favorite. There are three stories in this series and the ending of each is very sweet.

Who was the most memorable character of In From the Cold: The I Spy Stories and why?

Definitely Mark. The story is told from his point of view so it was a treat to get into his mind and learn how his (sometimes faulty) reasoning worked. His is a very enjoyable, albeit frustrating at times, journey.

Any additional comments?

This series was my first real foray into audio books and I couldn't have chosen a better 'gateway drug.' I really enjoyed the series when I first read it, but hearing the characters brought to life by Mr. Masters has endeared the books to me even more.
