Historia
The Abundance of Less captures the texture of sustainable lives well lived in these ten profiles of ordinary—yet exceptional—men and women who left behind mainstream existences in urban Japan to live surrounded by the luxuries of nature, art, friends, delicious food, and an abundance of time. Drawing on traditional Eastern spiritual wisdom and culture, these pioneers describe the profound personal transformations they underwent as they escaped the stress, consumerism, busyness, and dependence on technology of modern life.

I will listen again and again.
Revisado: 03-17-23
This book has what so many books about "simple living" and homesteading lack, which is the rich historical and philosophical basis for the choice. Choosing to grow your own food or live without much money has it's practical aspects too, but mostly you just need encouragement that you are on the right path, that the inconveniences are worth it, that you need to transcend the physical cravings for stuff and status and comfort in order to gain a richer existence. And while some of the book is a little woo-woo for this pragmatic, naturalistic American, I still loved it and got a lot out of it. I will listen to this over and over again, and will probably get a physical copy of the book as well.

Historia
Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

I’ve listened to it 5 or 6 times, and every time, I’m sorry to see it end. The characters are so lifelike and the stories so compelling.

“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

Historia
On a hot summer afternoon in 1928, the leaders of the world assembled in Paris to outlaw war. Within the year, the treaty signed that day, known as the Peace Pact, had been ratified by nearly every state in the world. War, for the first time in history, had become illegal the world over. But the promise of that summer day was fleeting. Within a decade of its signing, each state that had gathered in Paris to renounce war was at war. And in the century that followed, the Peace Pact was dismissed as an act of folly and an unmistakable failure.

Chock-full of information
Revisado: 03-03-19
I learned more about international law reading this book than I had heard about in the entire rest of my life. This book is densely packed with information that I only had a vague notion of before. Almost none of it I had learned about in any history class I'd ever taken. They weave their case with a thousand strands, and ties it up so neatly you can't help but agree with their conclusions. My only complaint was the narrator was a bit dry.

Good idea, and research to back it up

I played the narrator at .75 speed, because it sounded like a record playing at high speed. I thought the book was very useful. It was repetitive, but for me it was a good thing.

Revisado: 01-04-17
My son loves these little books. It's too bad they aren't longer. Robinson does a good job of giving an overview of the subject of the book, and making it interesting with funny voices, sound effects, and little tidbits that delve in a little bit deeper (interesting quotes, etc.).

Historia
Thousands of years, way before Christopher Columbus set sail, wandering tribes of hunters made their way from Asia across the Bering land bridge to North America. They didn't know it, but they had discovered a New World. The First Americans is a fascinating re-creation of pre-Columbian Native American life, and it's an adventure of a lifetime!

For Kids

Wonderful, detailed history books for kids
Revisado: 10-30-16
My favorite part of these books, besides how well they cover the material is best described by this:
...imagine that you are in a conversation with a reader who is as competent as you are, but happens not to know some things that you know. And you orient the reader so that they can see something in the world with their own eyes that you have noticed, but they have not yet noticed… A symmetry between reader and writer. A conversational, informal style. A determination to be visual and concrete. An excitement about showing the reader something in the world that the reader can see for themselves...(Steven Pinker)
This is exactly how Joy Hakim treats the material in these books. I love how she explains words that she uses. She uses the unfamiliar, but most appropriate word, but rather than just leaving the kid out to dry, she adds a little aside explaining it. But not in such a way that she's talking down to the reader. It adds so much to the book.

Radical Unschooling is a progressive parenting philosophy, which includes children learning at home. It is different from homeschooling in that children are not forced to follow curriculum lessons and tests. Radical Unschooling philosophy focuses on trust of a child's innate ability to learn without coercion and invites children to explore their passions. The parent's role is to facilitate their interests and curiosity. Radical Unschooling - the book - focuses also on the evolutionary aspect of parenting and human consciousness....

Revisado: 01-04-14
If you could sum up Radical Unschooling in three words, what would they be?
Inspiring
What did you like best about this story?
I like to listen to this book to remind me to be on my child's side.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator sounded like a robot. She read like the GPS in my car.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, you can drop it and pick it up again anywhere in the book, and that's not a bad thing.
Any additional comments?
She's got good ideas, and I've listened to this multiple times while I'm working, but the narrator is not good at all.
