Historia
The story told in Vasily Grossman's Stalingrad unfolds across the length and breadth of Russia and Europe. At the heart of the novel is the Shaposhnikov family. Even as the Germans advance, the matriarch, Alexandra Vladimirovna, refuses to leave Stalingrad. Far from the front, her eldest daughter, Ludmila, is unhappily married to the Jewish physicist Viktor Shtrum. Viktor's research may be of crucial military importance, but he is distracted by thoughts of his mother in the Ukraine, lost behind German lines.

Grossman’s Stalingrad. Yes but..,
Revisado: 05-01-25
Grossman was the great Russian Jewish writer of the 20th century: wonderful portraits and incisive characters, well-told action. The problem is that this excellent book is deeply marred by what it took to get it published in Stalin’s Soviet Union. Praise of Stalin and glorious celebration of Soviet labor, shading the Gulag out of existence. The whole terrible cost of Stalinist industrialization, the organized brutality of the Russian military. Grossman goes on to be one of Russia’s great dissidents. The breadth of the novel is stunning. Readers should be warned, though the compromises undercut the work

His style does is an accomplishment for detective stories to follow. Joy to listen to. A curious blend of colorful metaphors and straight on writing.

Revisado: 10-30-24
Brilliant and rigorous, Fair and objective. It’s quite a work that grows on you. His novels carry the same values but are more engaging. Tragedy comes even for the villains and starters of wars. You feel their pain. But it doesn’t always end with rough justice of WW2. In our day warmongers don’t seem to get any comeuppance.

In the end a pretty middlebrow piece with unlikely plots and feel good entanglements. It’s well written and clever and never completely obvious.

Historia
Perhaps the most autobiographical of Zola's Rougon-Macquart cycle of novels, The Masterpiece is a hard, bleak, and raw portrait of unrecognized artistic genius. Claude Lantier, brother to Nana and son of Gervaise, is a struggling painter who dreams of conquering the Paris art scene with his revolutionary "open air" style of painting. Discouraged and mocked, Claude retreats to the countryside with a young woman from Clermont, with whom he has fallen in love, before returning to Paris, where he continues to experience rejection at every turn.

Hash light on the drive to greatness
Revisado: 03-17-24
Not Zola’s best but still it is Zola. Clear intelligent writing and description. A little unconvincing but driven by a desire to show us what not to do. The joy of painting gets lost of course but narrative doesn’t drink deep enough of joy and satisfaction of painting. Very harsh portrait of many of the young artists trying to put together a movement to bring them fame.

Historia
The Years is a personal narrative of the period of 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and present - even projections into the future - photos, books, songs, radio, television, and decades of advertising and headlines, contrasted with intimate conflicts and written notes from six decades of diaries. Local dialect, words of the time, slogans, brands, and names for ever-proliferating objects are given a voice here. The voice we recognize as the author's continually dissolves and re-emerges.

A new way to do a historical novel
Revisado: 03-17-24
Only aspect I didn’t like was the narrator. She does absolutely fine job but was the wrong choice for this book. A hash very English accented voice. The American listener gets about a third of the references but that’s enough to bring this beautiful book to life. In sections it’s powerfully evocative of a time or times. It’s extraordinary personal but works for different nationalities, age and gender. I think works so well because of its limited but focused narrative.

How to make Vikings dull? Almost hard to do. Characters forgettable so hard to keep track of them even though they’re aren’t many of them. The Viking tv series was so good expected something similar. Recommendation for historical novels on internet neither I’ve read have been very good. Ends abruptly and inconclusively.

A Novel of manners,French and Arab. And of place and a time.
Revisado: 02-06-24
Beautifully, almost perfectly narrated. Effortlessly told story of a person and his historical journey. About an era few of us know, about Nablus as actual place with actual people. Quietly and interestingly told. Palestine before the war for land and place got even worse, suggesting in an alternative universe that things could have turned out very different. But like Shakespeare she can give a nod to the other side.

Historia
Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.

Unpleasant reading. Wow. She is desperate to get the smell of men from her rooms. Is handy with knives and long on complaints. Her son’s followers disrespecting street thugs. Actually most street gang thugs are respectful of the elderly.
