Historia
In The Unicorn Project, we follow Maxine, a senior lead developer and architect, as she is exiled to the Phoenix Project, to the horror of her friends and colleagues, as punishment for contributing to a payroll outage. She tries to survive in what feels like a heartless and uncaring bureaucracy and to work within a system where no one can get anything done without endless committees, paperwork, and approvals. One day, she is approached by a ragtag bunch of misfits who say they want to overthrow the existing order, to liberate developers, to bring joy back to technology work.

Not a sequel but a different angle
Revisado: 09-07-24
I assumed this was a sequel to the Phoenix project but it wasn’t. It was the same story from the Star Trek “red shirts” instead of the bridge officers. In that regard I dropped it a star as it’s a bit like of this event is about to happen, but that was a minor annoyance and if you’ve not read Phoenix you might be the better for it. Inside the IT story they did well to create good scenarios that I think you’d face. If you want to drop into the IT of a major change using a fictional business- you couldn’t find a better book

Once more into the Drew-a-verse of fantasy. It’s yet another clever, funny magical world created with a twist that makes it unique and exciting to listen to. It’s a quick listen but well performed. One for the dog lovers

Historia
My name is Drew Hayes, and for the past six years I've made my living as a writer. In that time, I've published 20 books, written hundreds of thousands of words, and made countless mistakes - most of which I like to think I've learned from. Underqualified Advice (and Other Amusing Diversions) is my attempt to compile those lessons and share them with others, as well as have some fun along the way. Half of the book is dedicated to detailing specifics about writing, maneuvering the industry, and keeping fiscally afloat in largely unstable waters.

I'm a lover (of DH), not a writer (ever)
Revisado: 08-16-24
A story about being a writer particularly if you want to make a living off it. But that's not why I read it. I don't have any desire to write for a living yet this was another unstable read. This is a bit all over the place but it works. Its like speaking to a brain spider 🕷️ that lives in Drew Hayes head. I imagine this is like hearing 10 panel talks by Drew covering serious business and weird shit that's probably in here rather than paying for a psychiatrist. Its funny and informative.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Just don't
Revisado: 05-02-24
The sci-fi genre is full of excellent work so don't waste time with this. It's just blah. It had aspirations of adequacy halfway through as dialogue between characters development only to stagnate and die.

Howey’s home are short stories
Revisado: 03-30-24
I was addicted to the Wool series but it does have its issues. Largely due to the short turned long form it takes. This collection - while not all platinum - is filled with a quality that wows across a range of topics. I highly recommend it with both some early winners, mid throw backs to wool and an epic number few closers.

The idea of work fiction is funny but like the Goal this nails it with a case study like style and characters you can see develop. It’s not amazing fiction writing but great business writing you’ll retain and connect with

Groundhog Day but over many years and much deeper
Revisado: 01-28-23
The story feels familiar but there is no Bill Murray… a chance to live again… to know the future. I was completely absorbed in this and terrified if I was put into it. It’s hard discuss the depth of this book without giving away the plot. It might be loosely termed Sci-fi but it’s a book of introspection.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Revisado: 01-23-23
The problem with Drew Hayes books I find is that I binge them and realize I didn’t savior them enough. Thankfully here is another series to binge and it’s goooood. I worried it would by on the YA side of things but I don’t think so now. It can have elements of predictability - oh this is setting up that. But even those have little clever twists that cause a smile.
It’s a fun read based on an interesting premise - if a world had super heroes wouldn’t it also have not quite supers? Those struggling to control their powers. Drew Hayes has a talent for turning his pen to such deep dive silly questions in a page turning style while committed to the world he builds. Welcome to Lander University’s Hero Certification Program.

Historia
In this grand poetic vision of the universe, Lawrence Krauss tells the dramatic story of the discovery of the hidden world that underlies reality - and our place within it. Reality is not what you think or sense - it’s weird, wild, and counterintuitive, and its inner workings seem at least as implausible as the idea that something can come from nothing. With his trademark wit and accessible style, Krauss leads us to realms so small that they are invisible to microscopes, to the birth and rebirth of light, and into the natural forces that govern our existence.

Nearly returned after first few chapters but then couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 11-23-22
The story of particle physics and the history that brought us to this point. I’m use to religious zealots being intolerant so was surprised and slightly put off by the start of this book. Then we covered science up to Einstein, nothing added here - why am I listening still - I asked myself. Then it took a different turn … Minkowski … who? This turned took us off the well worn path science history into the greatest story ever told about the most fundamental building blocks of our universe. I stopped and watched YouTube videos to back fill my knowledge. Do I understand the Higgs Field not really but I know better what I don’t know. Eye opening. Must read. Science interest a prerequisite.

Historia
Often remembered as the president who died shortly after taking office, William Henry Harrison remains misunderstood by most Americans. Before becoming the ninth president of the United States in 1841, Harrison was instrumental in shaping the early years of westward expansion. Robert M. Owens now explores that era through the lens of Harrison’s career, providing a new synthesis of his role in the political development of Indiana Territory and in shaping Indian policy in the Old Northwest.

Enjoyable bio of one aspect of the shortest serving President
Revisado: 10-14-22
This isn’t a comprehensive Presidential bio of William Henry Harrison but one that ties in early US / Native American policy in an informative way. It was boring at times but without the focus more on the policy it would have been painful I’m sure. For those seeking to learn the history surrounding pre and post War of 1812 Native American policy from the perspective of the future president this is your book. The election and short term are perhaps only a few paragraphs so don’t buy if that’s your area of interest.
