Somehow made Custodes boring
Revisado: 01-04-23
The plot, holistically, is fine. The actual pacing and delivery leaves much to be desired. Banks could only do so much to save the story from being an absolute snore-fest until around chapter 20 or so. There are some incredible grim-derp moments in the story, too.
It isn't bad, just dry. It does offer new insight into M41 Terran political landscape, but not much beyond that. This is not bolterporn, so if you want something very action-packed I'd look elsewhere.

Historia
It's the end of Gaunt's Ghosts! No, really, the Tanith First has been disbanded, and Gaunt has been sent elsewhere. What will it take to draw them back together? How about a stonking big Chaos attack? The Tanith First are no more. Moved into another regiment under a charismatic new commander, the loyalties of the former Ghosts are put to the test when Colonel-Commissar Gaunt, long believed dead, returns. As the enemy overrun the Imperial forces, Gaunt must fight not only to be reunited with his Ghosts, but to stop all their lives being thrown away in an unwinnable war.

Incredible turning point
Revisado: 09-24-22
It's easy to see it coming from a mile away. You know it *must* happen, but you're still wondering how it gets there anyway. Abnett takes such great care with his characters, and here we see it done again.
Regarding the narration, Longworth fails to miss a single beat. There was a single recording error, some mis-edited, double-read section in the middle chapter, but poignantly enough, it inadvertently fixes that particular moment even more weight. I genuinely look forward to seeing these two work together in the future.

Odd but poignant retroactive character development
Revisado: 09-20-22
There's a joke in this book that took nearly 8 hours of context and set up before its sprung up on the reader in a random chapter in a random moment and it sent me laughing for literally 5 minutes. That scene alone is worth a credit IMO.
Other than that, this is an extremely good entry in the Gaunt's Ghosts series. Pick it up after you've read the main series first. It takes place prior to the 3rd book.

Historia
For 10,000 years, Cadia stood as a bastion against the daemonic tide spewing forth from the Eye of Terror. But now the Fortress World lies in ruins, its armies decimated in the wake of Abaddon the Despoiler and his Thirteenth Black Crusade. Those who survived, though haunted by the loss of their beloved homeworld, remain bloodied and unbarred, fighting ruthlessly in the Emperor’s name. Amongst them is the indomitable Sergeant Minka Lesk.

Weaker than the last book

First act and final acts are very good, but the overall middling story likes to drone on a bit too much for my tastes. Good Guard novel.

Comedy in a grimdark setting.
Revisado: 06-20-21
Solid narration. The tone of the book is definitely not like most 40k. It is very light hearted and actually can be quite funny.

A wonderful introduction to 40k
Revisado: 08-16-20
This could be a stand-alone, one-off novel and still be an insanely competent listening. It includes all of the subtleties and intricacies of the 41st Millennium, following the exploits of the titular 'Gaunt's Ghosts' through the Sabbat Worlds campaigns. I couldn't shut this thing off, and finished it in a single day. Phenomenal writing, and wonderful characters.
