solid techno thriller
Revisado: 12-29-22
I'm familiar with the video games this is based on and I think this was a good representation of them. sufficiently dislikable villains. Sam Fisher feels a little less charming and more steely than I remember, but I guess he's gone through some shit. He already started off at retirement age. I was hoping they'd let him retire and let his daughter take over... maybe someday.

Historia
Conan the Barbarian, the world’s most famous fantasy hero, returns in an all-new novel tied directly to the famous works by his legendary creator, Robert E. Howard. Set early in his life, Conan has left his northern homeland to cut a bloody swath across the legendary Hyborian Age. A mercenary, a soldier, a thief, and a pirate, he faces conquering armies, malicious sorcerers, and monstrous creatures—against which he wields only the sword held in his powerful grasp.

Well written, but overall uninteresting.
Revisado: 12-23-22
I had high hopes for this. I enjoy much of the author's work and I'm a big fan of Conan. The moment to moment story is good and gets the feel of the Hyborian age across very well. It was a pleasure to revisit the place. But the story has lots of pointless filler, fights with wildlife mostly that don't accomplish anything and have no stakes. But the most disappointing part is that it goes nowhere. The whole story is just filler to set the scene for Red Nails. It doesn't really have a plot just a bunch of scenes. there's no villain, rising tension, or conflict. It doesn't really go anywhere, except to the doorstep of a better story.

Historia
Consider this other 1920: Imperial Germany has become the most powerful nation in the world. In 1914, she crushed England, France, and Russia in a war that was short but entirely devastating. By 1920, Kaiser Wilhelm II is looking for new lands to devour. The United States is fast becoming an economic super-power and the only nation that can conceivably threaten Germany. The U.S. is militarily inept, however, and is led by a sick and delusional president who wants to avoid war at any price.

'MERICA! I knew what I was getting into...
Revisado: 02-08-20
it's pulp and that's fun. And I had fun. But the total lack of subtlety with the subject matter was disheartening by the end. The Geneva Convention is mentioned 4 times, all ways by 'Mericans. Twice it is to say that those dastardly Germans might violate it. Twice to say 'Merica was brilliant, brave, or desperate enough to ignore it.
It's a pulp adventure, and that's what I wanted. I guess I just also secretly wanted just a bit more.

Magiere has earned a reputation as the most formidable vampire slayer in the land. Villagers far and wide welcome her with both awe and disdain - grateful to her for ridding their towns of the undead menace, but finding themselves made poorer for their salvation. Magiere knows she's dealing with simple folk, who only wish to have their superstitions silenced, and sees nothing wrong with exploiting them for profit.

What a Terrible Night to Have a Curse
Revisado: 07-30-19
Finding good novels about vampire hunters in a fantasy setting is hard. This book spends much of its time with the vampires, making them into characters as much as the hunters. Very satisfying!
