Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A day in the life.
Revisado: 01-28-23
This was a great story about a day in the life of a brother and sister which spans several decades, actually. They stick together through thick and thin. Recently, a friend of mine told me this story was just okay because it lacked any plot and that’s what she’s looking for. While completely understanding her viewpoint, to me, life isn’t a plot line. Life is what happens while you’re making other plans. As the saying goes. And this is exactly how this story unfolds. They are basically born and raised in and around the NYC and Philadelphia areas and continue to live their lives there. There are memorable characters who float in and out of their lives. There are characters who don’t understand their close bond. And one of the best things about listening to the audio version is Tom Hanks narrates! He really does an awesome job of it.

Everything paranormal/supernatural.
Revisado: 01-10-23
This was a fun story involving thieves, ghosts, dead people, vampires, doomsday believers, angels, demons, and anyone else who can possibly have any power Or Trick they can do.
Coop has been hired to steal a little box. Then has been hired to steal it from the person he initially stole it for. Then hired again to steal it. And now absolutely everyone wants this box for what they it can do for them. It’s a mad valet through underground worlds, FBI type office buildings that specialize in the paranormal, people getting kidnapped, beat up, blown up. The narrator does a terrific job with all the voices. Not a dull moment with this story.

Never underestimate the ability of older people to outsmart you.
Revisado: 10-18-22
This is the third one in a series about a group of “geriatrics” living in a retirement community that get together every Thursday evening for a lovely discussion on unsolved murders. Each book gets better with new characters getting involved. I find it next to impossible at trying to figure out who the main culprit is, it’s that good. The characters all have endearing qualities and quirks. If you are looking for an easy read murder mystery that can make you break out in a laugh, then this is it.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

1950s feminism at it’s best
Revisado: 09-07-22
This was a fun listen. Set in the late 1950s when there social norms on how a woman should behave and what careers she can have. A young woman is a chemist and trying to earn her way through a man’s world. She starts dating another chemist (another awkward person and they totally get eachother) but she won’t marry him as that’s what is expected. They live happily anyway. Move ahead a few years and she is now a single mother of an illegitimate child. She is still a chemist trying to make it in a man’s world. She is a very straight talking, gonna tell it like it is, has no time for idiocy chemist. Any man who tries to stand in her way of achieving recognition as a female chemist is going to regret it.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Founding fathers and their relationships with eachother
Revisado: 09-01-22
This is a novel told from the viewpoint of Alexander Hamilton’s wife, Eliza Schuyler. Alexander is one of the founding fathers of the United States and she lives through it all, through several presidents, through wars to establish the country. She is extremely bold and strong willed. She actually helps shape America during this time period. This was actually quite fascinating and not as intimidating as I initially thought, as it’s over 23 hours as an audible. At least I can now name who
The first five presidents are! Small goal accomplished!

Such a disappointment
Revisado: 04-24-22
This is nothing like Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. This is supposed to be a psychological thriller and listening to over 12 hours of the main character talking in her mind (which means there’s not a lot of dialogue) and her husband literally convincing her she’s crazy doesn’t give us the ending we’re craving for. And the ending was so incredibly anti climatic. It was such a let down. There’s so much build up to awesome possibilities and then…nothing.

It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children - four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness - sneak out to hear their fortunes, A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

Not as good as it is described
Revisado: 11-15-21
I really like the concept of this novel but it was too long of a story and I didn’t enjoy the format really. The idea is that four siblings visit a gypsy fortune teller and are each given their death date. Skip to now they’re adults, each one remembers when they’re supposed to die and how they’re living their lives. In my opinion the first two siblings’ stories dominate the book whereas the second two siblings’ stories were short and somewhat anti climactic. The mother was extremely irritating but then that leads to how good the narrator is for this audiobook. Over all it’s a good storyline but it just didn’t move me.

Historical fiction well told
Revisado: 06-20-21
This is set during WW2 in a small European village. An ex cleric answers an add from a widow seeking a husband to provide for her and her 3 children, no strings attached. As time goes by they learn how to maneuver around the awkwardness and he is eventually recruited to help the resistance. There’s danger involved as one of the the town’s head politicos is a nazi and has his eye on the newcomer. This is well told and the narration is very good. There is suspense. A bit of romance, reflections, anger. This brings another bit of WW2 history to the forefront. And a nice surprise is that this is the story of the author’s husband’s grandfather.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Hard to pay attention due to format.
Revisado: 05-28-21
I was so looking forward to this book. And it was a disappointment strictly because of the format of it. I actually don’t even know how this could be in a written format. It would be so confusing at times. Each character narrates their part and there’s at least a dozen characters. At first it was okay because each character would say their name before their narration. But sometimes they don’t announce who they are. For the female characters it wasn’t a problem but for the male characters it was. The subject matter is good: sex, drugs, rock and roll during the 70s. The rise and fall of a great band. I was just really turned off by the format.
