Fantastic book for teachers- pity about the charts
Revisado: 08-26-18
This book was such an eye-opener for me. I loved that Zaretta Hammond narrates it herself. I don't think I would have absorbed the information so well had another narrator been at the helm due to her clear authority on the subject. I especially appreciated all of the neurologic data included, which greatly helps me understand the sometimes unpredictable behavior of my underprivileged students. I even used her information about the amygdala as the basis for one of my first lessons on the first day of school, so they can start to recognize if it is being hijacked, and how to cope with it. Every time I was a little baffled at the information presented, Hammond clarifies with an anecdotal illustration. Overall the book makes the recent sociological and psychological data that is relevant to teachers accessible and digestible.
There were a lot of references to charts. I looked up the book and was sent to a website, but it wasn't clear if I could see the charts based on my purchase of the audiobook or if I would need to pay $150 for a special online course to become more culturally responsive. I must say I'm tempted to take the course, but I would have liked to have been able to see the data to whichHammond was referring.

Good information- dry delivery
Revisado: 08-26-18
I heard Michael Linsin in a podcast called "Cult of Pedagogy." He has this calm voice that immediately helps you understand how he has become a master of classroom management. His message is largely to never let your kids see you get angry with them, yell, lecture, or damage your relationship with them in any way. There was some useful stuff in here but it wasn't clear until I started the book that it is mostly only relevant for elementary teachers. I happen to teach high school and some of the advice would not work for teenagers- it might even get you laughed out of the room. Even so, I could translate a lot of the general messages to my high school classes, but I was so sad that the narrator was so stiff and formal when Michael Linsin himself is so grounded, earthy, and enthusiastic about his passion to help teachers manage their rooms. I would skip this book and just go listen to the podcast instead.
