It got better.
Revisado: 03-26-25
i thought the beginning was slow dark and dreary. But it got better when the action started. By the finale, it was great! Better than most of the series.

Great story. Cheesy humor, Good action
Revisado: 03-21-25
I am a sucker for the cheesy humor. Also the way Elvis goes down the list of options for what to do. And the cat is a character. But Falstaff beer was not made in Tumwater, Washington. The only beer made in Tumwater was Olympia beer. They advertised it as being made with artesian spring water. But the brewery sat right on the bank of the Deschutes River and we joked that they used river water.

Historia
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Dark and desperate

Post-apocalyptic fiction with dystopian conditions, low social conditions, and no hope of a future isn't my favorite genre. Think Mad Max on downers.

Good drama bad tradecraft.
Revisado: 03-07-25
I have read all the books in this series. The stories and characters are interesting. To sum them up I would say that the penny dreadful grows up into the dollar dreadful. I am charmed by the bumbling incompetence of the inspector and Gemma. And, if police work was so lacking in method and system in 19th century London, it's no wonder they seldom caught anyone too stupid to frame some poor bum.

Historia
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

Awesome! If a bit overly dramatic in spots
Revisado: 02-27-25
Small spoiler here: The biggest suspension of disbelief required was that Tommy was so stubborn about leveling with Evan regarding the weapons he made and how they got into the wrong hands. With all the sage advice that he shoveled out to everyone else, you would think he would be smarter than to let his pride come between him and his friend. And Evan let his avenging angel obsession do the same. An exaggerated morality play. But exciting and very well done. Joey did her part, too.

The stupidity
Revisado: 02-09-25
I always hate an author for the duration of a story when the protagonist does any of the following:
1. Puts down his gun so he can jeopardize the mission by fighting hand to hand in some kind of honor duel. just shoot and move on.
2. incapacitated an o opponent but leaves him alive and behind.
3. dispatches an enemy but fails to pick up an extra gun or ammo. then, a minute later, his slide kicks back or his hammer drops on an empty cartridge. stupid!
4. allows himself to be captured, trusting to luck, skill, and opponent incompetence for things to work out.
those are the signs of lazy and incompetent story telling. more clever intrigue. less drama. less hand to hand fighting. less stupidly getting caught off guard. more suspense. fewer cliches.

Historia
It's a gorgeous autumn day in Georgetown. The Democratic candidates for president and vice-president of the United States are dutifully glad-handing voters and the media outside a grand estate where a national-security conference has just been held, bringing together the world's greatest minds to discuss the issues that are threatening the country. It's American politicking at its best. That's when all hell breaks loose.

I liked the interplay of characters and story lines. The only thing I find off-putting is the "F"requent gratuitous use of the "F"word. I also liked the fact that there wasn't so much stupidity from the female players. Brooks and Steely showed remarkably good judgment.

Historia
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Two fatal flaws.
Revisado: 10-25-24
The story suffers from the narration. Ballard sounds similar to her male associates and all the males sound about the same. Also, keeping car keys on the wheel is stupid--even if you're not a cop with your badge and two unsecured pistols in the car. She deserves to be fired for that. it's beyond negligent! KGuard makes a key pouch that is IPX8 waterproof. You can buy a small pistol safe for the car and drill a hole for a solid padlock that a bike cable runs through and locks the safe to the seat frame. That kind of stupidity in a main character ruins the story. I'm halfway through and will finish to see how much dumber Ballard can get.

Historia
The Book of Mormon is a religious record of three groups of people who migrated from the Old World to the American continents. These groups were led by prophets who recorded their religious and secular histories on metal plates. The Book of Mormon records the visit of Jesus Christ to people in the Americas following his resurrection. A 200-year era of peace followed that visit of Christ.

The "full cast" performance is distracting
Revisado: 06-26-24
I love the Book of Mormon. However, when I read it, the voice in my head is the voice of Mormon, Ether, Nephi, Alma, etc.--male voices. Full cast, to me, would mean a variety of voices that match the characters. There are no female characters who speak. So, the female reader is distracting to me.
Unfortunately, I wasted a credit on this reading before finding out that there is a version o included in my membership that is read entirely by Sean Crisden.
