Read the End First
Revisado: 05-17-24
Engaging for most of story, but, since the author cites Stephen King at one point, there's no way that cock-a-doodie ending isn't a cheat. "I didn't cheer. I stood right up and started shouting...."

Runs rich and deep
Revisado: 01-06-22
Thick with detail and observation yet engaging and largely well-paced for a family saga.
The pace of narration, though, was too slow for me, perhaps because I was jumping between hard copy and Audible. This was the first book that I listened to selections from at anything other than 1x speed.

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

Wish I'd caught the live show
Revisado: 09-20-21
Entertaining and, at times only through inference, insightful. Certainly open, as they say, about her struggles and her life with parents who seem to be unprepared or uninterested in the role.
My guess is that her delivery would have worked better for me as an audience in a live show, but it was worth the listen.

Historia
Listen to this audiobook and become a happy non-drinker for the rest of your life. Feeling reliant on alcohol can be a difficult thing to come to terms with and even trickier to manage. This audiobook will cut through all that stress and set you on the right track with Allen Carr’s Easyway method. Allen Carr established himself as the world’s greatest authority on quitting smoking. His ground-breaking methodology tackles addiction from an entirely different angle which has been successfully applied to other addictions and behavioural issues.

Wonderful, at least as a complement
Revisado: 07-13-21
This is an odd listen. Carr's writing and rhetorical style is clearly based on some strategies he's found effective, but/and the repetition and use of analogy can be a bit off-putting. But here I am, without a drink for the longest stretch since the pandemic began and, more importantly, completely without the desire for a drink for the first time in almost thirty years. This was my second listen, and it's also just one tool in my toolbox, but right now it seems to have put me over the top.

In It's Only a Movie, the incomparable Mark Kermode took us into the weird world of a film critic's life lived in widescreen. Now, The Good, The Bad and the Multiplex takes us into the belly of the beast to ask: 'What’s wrong with the modern movie business – and how can we make it right?'

not for everyone?
Revisado: 12-01-19
Kermode is my recommendation for listeners "of a certain age"--GenX and slightly older perhaps. Film lovers of any generation, though, might enjoy his incisive, witty, and detailed observations and anecdotes. I'll be listening to this one again and again.

More Pate please
Revisado: 09-06-17
This story was engaging and thought provoking from beginning to end. Graham's performance leaves me wanting to find more of his readings. (I've rated the performance a four rather than five because of the frustrating changes in volume level--whispering when characters whisper riding to high volume when characters do.) I'd love to hear more of Alexs Pate's work on audible!

Historia
At the end of The Winter, King Arthur fought the battle that forces unity on the warring British kingdoms and now he sets out to face the real enemy - the English (it is one of the great ironies of the Arthur stories that he should have become an English hero when, if he existed at all, he was a great war-leader who opposed the invading Sais). First, though, Merlin leads a perilous expedition into the mysterious west to retrieve a cauldron, one of the treasures of Britain.

Historia
Cat's Cradle is Vonnegut's satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet's ultimate fate, it features a little person as the protagonist; a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer; and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny.

After a couple of Vonnegut audio books, I've come to the conclusion that, on the whole, I prefer to read his work, not listen to it. There are just too many lines I find myself wanting to return to.
