Historia
Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

kinds meh for me
Revisado: 09-27-22
Not quite what I was anticipating. Not sure why this was classified as Black's debut into adult novels because it read just like every other YA book. Charlie could have been a 60 year old male zookeeper and the story wouldn't have been the same. Nothing made her a standout heroine. If you're wondering, it had 2 possibly 3 fade to black sex scenes but honestly it was so dull and out of place I had to rewind and guess if that's where the story was going. Charlie's inner dialogue was long winded and repetitive which got tiresome. The ending was a nice plot twist but not very surprising and ends on a cliffhanger so it's obviously going to have a sequel. I'll read the 2nd book but I'm not biting my nails with anticipation

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 12-18-21
I've never been a fan of science fiction but this was amazing! I found myself laughing and shedding a few tears for the characters. The transition between present day and flashbacks was jumpy in a few places in the beginning but once the story got going you could tell when it was coming up. The story is heavy in math, but you don't need to have a degree in astrophysics to understand. Through Grace's rambling he explains everything. I did have to Google what some things looked like to get a grasp on what the story was talking about but a learned quite a bit as the story went along. This is my first Weir book so I'm going to look into his other novels, hopefully they're just as good

The worst narration I've ever heard.
Revisado: 10-14-21
What a struggle it is to listen to this narration!! The narrator sounds like she's in her 70s but the characters are in their late 30s - mid 40s. She draws out the words almost as if she's having a hard time keeping her place on the page. This awkward pace makes following the story very difficult. I regret getting this on Audible because I know if I was reading it I'd be highly engaged as the story itself is interesting. I'm only 1/4 the way through, so if I finish I'll review the story line in an update.

well... gosh that was... anti -climatic ?
Revisado: 06-19-21
I wanted to love this book but I don't know, it missed the mark for me. I knew right from the beginning Henry was cursed but his big reveal that he'd lied wasn't a surprise either, the watch gave it away. The back and forth timeline was fine, easy to follow but I was really annoyed by the constant referencing to the future. "It'll be 50 years before she realizes..." "100 years to learn that shade of green..." Enough already. The author needs to learn to be more subtle.
After 300 years you'd think Addie would develop some more character depth but honestly she's flat as a board. Luke was interesting in a dark lonely way but really the characters lack life. We skim over 300 years of incredible world history and we only get brief mentions of it. Henry isn't curious enough to ask Addie "Was the 20s really like the movies?" "Tell me a secret you stole during WWII?" Who wouldn't want to know and who wouldn't want to tell those incredible stories finally?? But no we don't get that. We get a love triangle. And a boring one at that!

Beautiful and Moving
Revisado: 05-27-21
A beautiful tale about one of the darkest time periods in American history. Let's be fair, the Great Depression and Dust Bowl are not happy subjects. The author did a fabulous job of portraying the magnitude of the situation and the dire conditions people were living in. They had little to be joyful about and for many the flame of HOPE dwindled to a mere ember. There is a lot of emotion going on in this story. Fear, love, pride, sadness, rage, desperation and of course hope. It is certainly a roller coaster ride and having studied the 30's I didn't expect a whole lot of happiness. I commend the author for not falling into the trap of sugar coating a story so readers don't get their feelings hurt. This story, while the characters are fictional, is hundreds of thousands of people's stories. Based on facts. For those of you who stopped reading because of Jack's association with American Communist Party; grow up and read a history book and stop berating the author for including historical fact. Strikes and riots were happening all over the west, where poor farmers and migrants were looking for their voices to be heard. Real life Jacks were rallying the beaten people to fight against corrupt Big Money. You can't erase history because it makes you uncomfortable. Learn from it, grow from it.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A story of mental health and rediscovering hope
Revisado: 04-01-21
Very interesting storyline overall. I found a few spots long winded and others without enough detail. The way she left her life with Ash and Molly was sad and confusing and pretty abrupt. The bit about her realizing she was cheating Molly from her 'real' mother really hit me in the gut. Mental health is an important issue to talk about and this book delves into self loathing and loss of hope, the constant desire for something better and how regrets of the past can rob you of your future.

Revisado: 02-18-21
Great story. The worst narration I've ever heard. I find myself laughing at the ridiculous panting and grunting when I should be relishing in the intimacy between the characters. All the females sound the same, the narrator even tried giving Elaine a deep sultry voice. Ridiculous. I don't recommend listening to the audiobook, buy the book.

Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing - a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.

not sold on the premise of Good and Evil
Revisado: 02-13-21
the author could have taken out the Heaven and Hell aspects of the story and still come to the same climax and ending so I'm not sure it added anything to the story. Hero is definitely an interesting character. I like him much better than I can relate to Claire. For her to be the main character she was rather 1 dimensional, while the characters had more depth and likability.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 03-09-20
If this had been written by any other author than SMJ, I would have returned this book within the first 6 chapters. I don't even know where to start. I cried bitter tears of disappointment from the first chapter all the way until chapter 30ish. I couldn't even wrap my brain around the fact that SJM wrote this book. The beginning was a hot mess and needed a flow chart to keep straight. The reader is literally bombarded with information overload about houses, gates, factions, types of monsters and so on in the first few pages. After you get through that then the over done sexual encounters, awkward cussing and the drugs start. NONSTOP. The book is literally about getting people addicted to drugs to give them super human strength to win a war. What a huge turn off. I absolutely loved her other books and have read them all 6+ times. As an adult in my 30's I'm disgusted that this is considered an adult series. I expected more in depth, heart felt conversations and real life emotions. What I got was the equivalent of Zootopia with foul language and sex. Almost like a young teenager wrote a story about what they think life as an adult is like. The Fae Prince's frat house has a beer pong table and is littered with liquor bottles. Come on SJM!!! **FACEPALM** TOG and ACOTAR had more mature relationships and insight than this by far. I hated the insta-love between Bryce and Hunt. Couldn't she have fallen in love with a merman or vampire or Wolf or anything other than another winged male. (I LOVE RHYS, Cassian and Azriel) As I read it was almost as if she took all the characters from her other two series gave them different names and slapped them into this book but not in a good way... Bryce = Celaena Sardothien. Hunt = A cross between Cassian and Azriel. Ruhn= Dorian. Danika= Sam Courtland/Nehemia Ytger. I could go on and on. Why did she rehash the same hidden half fae princess with hidden mega power. Same self sacrifice to close a gate to get rid of monsters. Why??!! The last eight chapters were good. More her writing style, passionate and badass and would have been perfect if she would have just cut out the vomit inducing moaning and groaning. Overall I think this book was a huge letdown and SJM could have taken this series in a whole new direction instead of rehashing the same overdone theme. I'm returning my copy of the hard cover book in protest. P.S. If you say you didn't picture Hunt as Deadpool with his baby legs waiting for his wings to regrow you're a liar.
