Historia
In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well.

Revisado: 11-21-24
The story was monotonous and unexpected implausible. However, certain people are able to get away with murder. Reminds me of the stand your ground laws.

Historia
Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

An important story
Revisado: 09-02-24
This is an important story about the history of America and the strength and wisdom of the African American people after slavery. That they were able to make a peaceful and prosperous home for their families in Jim Crow south is astonishing. It’s a pleasure to read a story during this terrible time that ends in triumph!

Historia
On his first night in his new home, Warren spies two figures in the grass outside; when he screws up the nerve to confront them, they disappear. The next day he encounters ghosts of a different kind: In the face of the teenage girl he meets at a comics convention, he sees the mingled features of his white father and his black mother, both now dead. The girl is his daughter, and she thinks she's white.

Rambling
Revisado: 01-11-24
This was like reading someone’s rambling nightmare. There were too many undeveloped topics. What was the point of the Black lady who he was no longer attracted to and husband had a white girlfriend?? The whole biracial white looking exclusive school was sad.

This astonishing novel from three-time National Book Award finalist Rita Williams-Garcia about the interwoven lives of those bound to a plantation in antebellum America is an epic masterwork—empathetic, brutal, and entirely human—and essential reading for both teens and adults grappling with the long history of American racism.

Entertaining
Revisado: 07-09-23
Garcia is a gifted storyteller and this was an interesting perspective and the author’s note in the end explains why. I felt that to some extent the story perpetuated negative stereotypes that Black women aren’t beautiful, black men can’t be committed to one woman and slaves loved the people who enslaved them.

Historia
Ida B. Wells is an American icon of truth telling. Born to slaves, she was a pioneer of investigative journalism, a crusader against lynching, and a tireless advocate for suffrage, both for women and for African Americans. She cofounded the NAACP, started the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, and was a leader in the early civil rights movement. This engaging memoir relates Wells’ private life as a mother as well as her public activities as a teacher, lecturer, and journalist in her fight for equality and justice.

Story everyone should know
Revisado: 02-16-22
I often here that America is the land of opportunity and Black people don’t take advantage of it. Imagine if we had more people like Ida B Wells who understood how to fight the system that was (and still is) determined not to let African Americans realize that dream. Before reading the book, I associated Ida B Wells more with women’s suffrage, but she dedicated her life to fighting for Justice for her people. Excellent book!

Historia
Franciszka and her daughter, Helena, are simple, ordinary people until 1939, when the Nazis invade their homeland. Providing shelter to Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland is a death sentence, but Franciszka and Helena do exactly that. In their tiny home in Sokal, they hide a Jewish family in a loft above their pigsty, a Jewish doctor with his wife and son in a makeshift cellar under the kitchen, and a defecting German soldier in the attic - each party completely unknown to the others.

Beautifully written
Revisado: 06-09-21
I loved this book. It was very well written and gave you a good depiction of what it would be like to live in India after British rule. My only complaint is that the main character’s need for blue eyes to make them appear more beautiful. Otherwise I loved this book and will think about the characters for weeks after reading.
