Moving, unique personal story
Revisado: 09-16-24
This moving, unique personal story will resonate with anyone who's every had parents they didn't fully understand, who didn't fully understand them. And it also offers funny, touching, surprising insights into what it was like for one little girl to grow up feeling isolated and othered. Highly recommend!

Historia
The Riders Come Out at Night is the culmination of over twenty-one years of fearless reporting. Ali Winston and Darwin BondGraham shine a light on the jackbooted and sadistic cops known as “The Riders,” and the lack of political will and misguided leadership that have conspired to stymie meaningful reform. The authors trace the history of Oakland since its inception through the lens of the city’s police department, through the Palmer Raids, McCarthyism, and the Civil Rights struggle, the Black Panthers and crack eras, to Oakland’s present-day revival.

Must-read for all
Revisado: 05-22-23
So fascinating, not just for an Oakland or Bay Area resident, but all Americans interested in the legacy of (and ongoing) police violence, corruption, and brutality that continues to create such inequitable experiences of "safety" and "protection."
An amazing amount of investigative research -- and personal risk -- must have gone into this work. And the quality of the writing makes it an edge-of-your-seat page turner.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Life changing and life affirming
Revisado: 02-06-23
Viola Davis' impassioned description of growing up so very poor in Rhode Island that she and her siblings could feel the rats climbing on top of them while they slept (for years!), and then clawing her way out to become a major award-winning actress, is amazing. But it's what she really finds that's the most moving and inspiring of all.

Historia
In this fascinating narrative, therapist Catherine Gildiner presents five of what she calls her most heroic and memorable patients. Among them: A successful, first-generation Chinese immigrant musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her at age nine with her younger siblings in an isolated cottage in the depth of winter; and a glamorous workaholic whose narcissistic, negligent mother greeted her each morning of her childhood with "Good morning, Monster". Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years.

Fascinating case studies of a therapist's 5 unique patients who overcame traumatic childhoods. Not for the faint of heart at times. Still, a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.

Historia
From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

No wonder Jennifer became such a phenom out of the gate. All young women could relate to her, wanted to be her. Just like that watershed performance, where for what seemed like the first time ever, someone showed us who we were as girls, this funny, irreverent narrative shows us who we are as women. Loved it!
