Historia
Eva Kavinsky wakes in a dark cellar, with no memory of how she got here. Imprisoned with her, seemingly at random, are four men. The only way out is the trapdoor in the ceiling – and it's locked. The single clue about what brings them all here is a cryptic message sprayed onto one wall. Connect the dots. Repent. A camera fixed high above reach is livestreaming this whole nightmare to the world. What confessions are they meant to make to their unseen audience?

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Not at all what I expected
Revisado: 08-02-23
I actually started to listen and then stopped only a few "pages" in. I didn't think it sounded like it would be something I enjoyed. Decided after a bit to try again and started over. Really glad that I did.
Demon has such a sad life and yet he perseveres - it reminds me of a Dickens novel. Demon Copperhead/ David Copperfield, even to a Peggotty (Peggot family - strikes a similar and familiar chord of survival against all odds.

Well read beautiful story
Revisado: 07-06-23
Korea and Koreans have faced so much hardship and heartache over the centuries, but the Japanese occupation from around the turn of the 19th to 20th century to just after WWII was an extremely hard time. This novel does an excellent job of capturing the times and the people who lived there, and died there. Highly recommended.

Great story, well told!
Revisado: 05-17-23
I had never heard of Everett Ruess until a friend mentioned this book. So glad that he did. I've enjoyed learning about Everett as well as the unfolding mystery that is his death. A lonely existence reminiscent of the lost canyonlands of northern NM and southern CO and UT. A wistful tale, full of beauty and sadness.

I listened to the audio book version and was glad to hear the correct pronunciation of names and places that I would have stumbled over if reading myself. Although a bit hard to understand at times, overall I found the reader's voice pleasant and well suited to the story. She brought the young female protagonist alive.

Tackling some of humanity’s oldest questions along with new quandaries only he could imagine, these stories will change the way you think, feel, and see the world. Some intriguing ideas...
Revisado: 09-26-22
Ted Chiang has a vivid and complex view of future worlds. I found his stories interesting enough to listen through to the end, even though the presentation was done in an almost robotic fashion. I wondered if the readers were chosen or directed to sound like AIs? Chiag's writing is also very technical, almost instruction manual dry at times. I understand his need to describe the invented technologies, but it doesn't move the story along as it should. I hope that he keeps writing, and growing as an author, as he has ideas worth developing. I must note that I particularly enjoyed "The Great Silence" and the title story "Exhalation."

Long ago read the short story Ender's Game
Revisado: 05-07-22
I read the short story many years ago and although I'd forgotten the author and the title, I remembered the story. I came across Ender's Game while searching for another book, and thought "that's it - that's the great story I remembered." On researching it I found the book version and the subsequent novels. So now I'm reading through the series via Audible and really enjoying them. Thank you Orson Scott Card and Audible for this great collection.

Historia
Why are humans seemingly hardwired to worship gold? It is unique amongst metals: it is malleable, it doesn’t tarnish, and it shines like nothing else. Over time it has come to symbolise wealth and status. It can represent goodness and fidelity but also greed and lust. Financial educator, author and broadcaster Alvin Hall explores why we are so obsessed with this particular metal, and what it represents around the world - in terms of wealth and symbolism - both historically and now.
