I like Michener, and this is an interesting historical novel of an area I visit often. But the wooden narration is almost painful. I'm used to narrators that "act" the story with their voices rather than just reading with minimal inflection and emotion.

Story was more romance than historical novel for my taste. The narrator shouldn't attempt accents. The French accents were so strangled that I kept thinking of the old Steve Martin line, "Help him - he's speaking French!". It was too distracting.

Sounded like they called the narration into a radio station. First time I've ever heard something like this on Audible. Are you sure this wasn't originally recorded for Librivox? I always enjoy Maeve Binchy, and the narrator was fine, but the sound quality was not.

Laughed so much at Chip's tale,, even as I was touched by this story of love and light.
