But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright. Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold.

I randomly chose this book to read. I didn’t know what it was about but just purchased it. I didn’t realize how much it affected me until the end. I was pregnant at 16 and my parents forced me to get an abortion after I refused being sent down south and adoption. It was never spoken of again. I don’t recall being told not to speak of it. I think it was an unspoken demand. My parents worked very hard and considered themselves upper middle class. My mother walked around in some weird depression for months after as if this thing whatever it was happened to her. It was refreshing to see another perspective of such a familiar situation. I appreciate how authentic the characters, their actions and thoughts were. I couldn’t stop listening, I like the main character and many other young women through the grace of God have persevered. Thank you for telling this story.
