Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Tired trope of Gamache fighting the rest of world
Revisado: 12-07-24
I wanted to like this book, however, it was a struggle to finish it. The “race for time”, when you know they will win was tedious. I didnt have a problem with the new narrator. But we’ve read this story before with Gamache trying to save canada and not knowing who in his world he can trust. I want a new, interesting story for Gamache. Perhaps a good old fashioned murder mystery (he is the head of homicide after all). No conspiracies in the government. Just intriguing murder. And yet, the ending of this book told us the next book will be more of the same. Sigh.

Could not finish. Found a review that had spoilers and was very glad i stopped listening. It just gets worse the deeper in you go.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Disappointing

If not for the enjoyable narration, i would have given up. I predicted the sad ending when we first meet the “school for boys”. I kept listening because the narrator was good and hoped that I was wrong.

Historia
A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining. So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

So disappointing
Revisado: 10-16-22
I have given up on this book. I wanted to like it. But the main character is annoying weak and stupid. Ive seen some write ups that refer to her as strong. Seriously? Halfway through the book and she is still a whimpering dishrag who falls easily onto the arms of the strong male. Such horrible focus on the girls’ appearances. Tons of girl on girl hate. Really awful. Tiny hints that the main character might figure out that its all just racism and will move beyond it, but thats happening way too slowly.

Rape & child mutilation. UGH.
Revisado: 12-10-19
Add to that, repeated paragraphs from the first book to remind me of "backstory". I found the start to the book annoying and have decided not to finish it and return it. I've read the teasers for many of the other books in this series, and am not going to bother with any others. Or any others from this author.

Just couldn't suspend belief that long
Revisado: 12-08-15
Really? Girls are missing and no one cares but Flavia? They allow her to continue worrying and investigating (by not answering her questions, even if just by reassuring her the girls are fine. Now, if she didn't believe them and continued investigating, that's another matter.). I just thought the entire premise was excruciatingly weak as to barely be tolerable enough to finish the book. Not even sure I will give the next book (whenever it comes out) a chance.
