Great story but didn't end when it should

I loved the story arc up to the point where we discover the truth about the old man in the nursing home. After that the book feels like some drama and "raising the stakes" must be added by putting the protagonist in danger. Followed by another round of raising the stakes even higher. It all feels tagged on and gratuitous - probably an expression of our times where no book or movie can end without "everything is on the line". The book was great up to all that stuff but how it ended was pretty meh.

Somewhat simplistic torture orgy

I must admit after a promising start the protagonist is starting to disappoint. Mitch Rapp is often consumed with rage and anger and comes across as unhinged and unprofessional. Torturing suspects is his immediate go to solution for everything, he enjoys revenge killings and outright executions and primitively threatens members of the US administration with violence or death should they cross him. Granted that the threats Mitch is dealing with will require compromises around things like due process, the rule of law, and upholding human rights and democratic values. What doesn't work for me however is his outright contempt for all these things he purports to protect, which Mitch isn't shy to announce in repeated, expletives laden, sexist, bloodthirsty and increasingly unhinged rants. Mitch often has a point but due to anger issues seems incapable of expressing himself in a professional and considered manner. Even Jack Bauer in post 9/11 panic had more perspective and decorum. As an allegedly top tier CIA operative Mitch Rapp has become a disappointment.

Good story, one weak point

I liked the story. The only thing that was completely off is Mitch's idiotic waffling when he is fessing up to his wife on his little adventure. For a secret agent the stupid rambling, catastrophic timing and complete cluelessness of how any normal woman in that situation will behave (and what one should -not- say unless with the intention to provoke a major meltdown), is truly breathtaking. He could not have handled that situation any worse, and he sounded like a complete imbecile. I get it that it was meant to create some drama but this was so over the top stupid that it completely took me out of the story. Otherwise I enjoyed the story.

Good story, challenged with narrator performance

I enjoyed the story but was more often than once annoyed with the often over exaggerated performance of the narrator. About half of the conversations between major characters were read in an over the top excited, flustered, panicked or otherwise emotive manner, which did not work for me. Also I have to say the litmus test for narrators of Mitch Rapp novels for me is if they care enough to look up how to pronounce Heckler & "Koch". This one clearly didn't.
