Historia
In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. The result is The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man—revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in places, always complex and profound.

Very personal portrayal. Not all of the readers worked that well. The main reader great. Some sounded like bad auditions.

Historia
When Goodfellas first hit the theaters in 1990, a classic was born. Few could anticipate the unparalleled influence it would have on pop culture, one that would inspire future filmmakers and redefine the gangster picture as we know it today. From the rush of grotesque violence in the opening scene to the iconic hilarity of Joe Pesci’s endlessly quoted “Funny how?” shtick, it’s little wonder the film is widely regarded as a mainstay in contemporary cinema.

The concentration of effort a bit skewed
Revisado: 06-11-24
I’d have liked more about the lasting impact of the film. The song by song analysis a bit much. If you are going to discuss the offensive and racist language in the movie don’t edit that out in the audio book. We are adults. Some of us.

Historia
A rare, intimate portrait of Christopher Nolan with the full cooperation of Nolan himself who opened up more fully than ever before in his talks with Tom Shone. In chapters structured by themes and motifs ("Time"; "Chaos"), Shone writes of Nolan's thoughts on movies, on plots; on time, identity, perception, chaos, daydreams. Here is Nolan on the evolution of his pictures, and the writers, artists, directors, and thinkers who have inspired and informed his films.

Historia
Natchez, Mississippi, once had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in America, and its wealth was built on slavery and cotton. Today it has the greatest concentration of antebellum mansions in the South, and a culture full of unexpected contradictions. Prominent White families dress up in hoopskirts and Confederate uniforms for ritual celebrations of the Old South, yet Natchez is also progressive enough to elect a gay Black man for mayor with 91 percent of the vote.

All those annoying voice imitations
Revisado: 10-28-21
The performance at times reminds me of the corny pageants that were being described. Is that what a Brit thinks a southern black man and woman sound like. I did not like the parallel story approach. It didn’t gel for me. I was always more interested in modern day Natchez.

Historia
Joe Eszterhas and Mel Gibson had a global confrontation in April of this year over their movie The Maccabees. Heaven and Mel is Eszterhas' explosive, unabridged, no-holds-barred account. It is a Hollywood story, but it's not. It is the story of love and hatred, of anti-Semitism and fathers and sons, and of a movie star's tragic sexual obsession. It is the story of God and the Devil, devastating but often hilarious.

Eszterhas - quite the hypocrite & coward
Revisado: 06-08-21
Granted Mel comes across as vile . But the book is flat when he’s not featured. Old Joe is very selective about when and where he applies his Christianity . Forgiveness & Chatity not a strong suit. As soon as his project looks to fail Joe Joe gets a big set and writes a letter. His default bravery seemed to be avoid and ignore . The reader makes every woman, teen, child sound nasally and annoying.

Historia
The first authoritative biography of film legend Bruce Lee, who made martial arts a global phenomenon, bridged the divide between Eastern and Western cultures, and smashed long-held stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans. Forty-five years after Bruce Lee’s sudden death at age 32, journalist and best-selling author Matthew Polly has written the definitive account of Lee’s life. It’s also one of the only accounts; incredibly, there has never been an authoritative biography of Lee.

Revisado: 02-21-21
I’m a Lee fan if not a fanatic. My father was a shortarse who adored this 5’7” phenom, so I grew up on Bruce. This book works as an amazing life story; a Hollywood struggle study and the creation of an icon and cultural game changer. One of the best biographies I’ve read.

The author shouldn’t do imitations
Revisado: 10-18-20
His Clint voice sounds like a 77 year old woman straining to have an orgasm. His Sergio Leone an interesting Italian parody that’s particularly odd since the director spoke no English. Good detail. The right length.

Revisado: 11-25-19
One is the aural equivalent of drying paint. The other RAISES that pitch every sentence. After the extended dull ratings system I got out and looked for something captivating. When you get to the conversation on the five in competition for best show, you may jump ship just out of port too.
