Historia
Scott Bradley James arrives in Annapolis, Maryland, as a plebe in the class of 1941 without a terribly good idea why he wants to be a naval officer, other than that his father was a sailor, and he wants to see the world, whatever that means. Scott and his roommate become fast friends, and, after surviving scrapes of their own making, the two fetch up at Pearl Harbor. War is brewing, and their class has graduated early. They have been sent to battle stations.

Not What I Thought
Revisado: 02-14-25
Have great respect for James Stavridis but this book was not what I expected. It reads more like a love story to me. It did have some good factually aspect to it but more reflective of a sailors love than a war perspective.
Not for me. Also did not realize it was to be a book series.

Historia
With A Furious Sky, Eric Jay Dolin has created a vivid, sprawling account of our encounters with hurricanes, from the nameless storms that threatened Columbus's New World voyages to the destruction wrought in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria. Weaving a story of shipwrecks and devastated cities, of heroism and folly, Dolin introduces a rich cast of unlikely heroes and puts us in the middle of the most devastating storms of the past, none worse than the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed at least 6,000 people, the highest toll of any natural disaster in American history.

Not Technically
Revisado: 01-12-25
It was a fantastic story about hurricanes throughout history.
It’s more reflective of people’s life experiences than based on the science and meteorological aspects of the storms. For me one story of misery and heartache is enough. Every chapter was pretty much the same. Again not a bad read but if you are looking for the scientific aspect of hurricanes I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Historia
Lucy Dawidowicz's groundbreaking The War Against the Jews inspired waves of both acclaim and controversy upon its release in 1975. Dawidowicz argues that genocide was, to the Nazis, as central a war goal as conquering Europe, and was made possible by a combination of political, social, and technological factors. She explores the full history of Hitler's "Final Solution", from the rise of anti-Semitism to the creation of Jewish ghettos to the brutal tactics of mass murder employed by the Nazis.

Not Objective in my Opinion
Revisado: 08-03-24
I have read numerous books about WW II from William Shirer to Volker Ullrich and this book although based in what would deemed as fact seems to have a multitude of personal judgments that should not be factored in.
I realize it is a very emotional subject that but should not be factored into the righting.
Good read but skewed by personal interjections

Historia
This riveting chronicle of submarine warfare is the first to cover all the major submarine campaigns of the war, describing, in detail, the operations of the British, American, Japanese, Italian, and German submarine and anti-submarine forces. Beginning with a vivid re-creation of the sinking of the passenger liner Athenia by a German U-boat in September 1939, critically acclaimed military historian Peter Padfield's compelling narrative casts an unflinching eye on the devastating consequences of maritime warfare.

Good Factually Premise Just Way To Drawn Out
Revisado: 04-13-24
Based on the stories told the book could have been half the length. I was hoping it consisted of maritime navel facts and engineering concepts of the subs themselves. Story after story about the sinking of convoy vessel holds value but after the first t hour it gets quite redundant. The book goes on for hours like this. Concept gets lost very quickly.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

If You Want A Historical View Stay Away
Revisado: 12-05-23
I am very big into historical books about maritime events. This book is basically a soap opera with very little historical value. If you are into the emotional aspects of passengers then by all means indulge. If you want historical fact look elsewhere. When it started describing the colors of the passengers suits I quite

Historia
Captain Guyan March had spent his entire professional career aboard Windjammer Barefoot Cruises’ fleet of extravagant tall ships that carry passengers on weeklong fantasy cruises spiced with rum and sun. When he agreed to command the Fantome, Windjammer’s marquee ship, a beautiful 282-foot schooner that “sailed like a pig” in the Gulf of Honduras, he knew that a storm would leave him little space to run. In the southern reaches of the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Mitch whirled to life like a nebula and became Captain March’s worst nightmare.

More Story Then Fact
Revisado: 09-01-23
Just me personally I was looking for more of a nautical narrative from the book. It took on more of a storyline of the people and families that were effected by the loss of the Fantome rather then the Marine aspects of the loss. Was hoping for more legal interpretations and USCG final reviews on the sinking.
Very good background on the vessel and it’s operations. If you are looking for more of a faxed based assessment of the sinking it’s not there.
Still a good read.

In Graveyard of the Lakes, Thompson suggests that most of the accidents and deaths on the lakes have been the result of human error, ranging from simple mistakes to gross incompetence. In addition to his compelling analysis of the causes of shipwrecks, Thompson includes factual accounts of more than 100 wrecks. Graveyard of the Lakes will forever change the listener's perspective on shipwrecks.

Very Factual and Very Redundant
Revisado: 04-15-22
I happen to be a reader of Maritime history and appreciate the facts the author put forward but it is basically a list of shipwrecks being read off.
Each chapter reads to me like a chronological list of boiler explosions and groundings and little engineering references. It seems very factual and well researched but difficult to listen to.
