Historia
The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right. He would try harder. With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick. Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway.

I loved it & the narration is fantastic.
Revisado: 01-12-23
Okay, I have listened to all 7 books, I have finished the series as it stands now, and it was awesome. I am putting this review here because it's the starting point of the series & when you see a series that is multiple books long you often think do I want to make this investment.
So, here's the deal, this is not a "time travel" book, the time travel (which is eventually explained) is more a device to get the character into the new setting. You are not going to read about someone hoping around time and sitting in a car with his mom before a school dance, if that's what you want look elsewhere. With that said it does come up as part of the plot, especially in the first few stories & adds another element to his situation, but it is not pop culture time travel. Which I think is part of the poor reviews, just not what people has in mind. What the book is though is an adventure story, discovering new places & people, interesting creatures and journeys.
I loved the main character Alex, admittedly I was rubbed the wrong way for a little with a decision that was made, but it quickly becomes a non-issue and corrects itself. The rich world building, the long journeys that aren't over in one page. The travel from place to place was itself important to the story and where a lot of the most interesting things occurred. Like a big open world videogame, some of the most fun parts are the side quests and characters. The series builds on itself with each book, the narrator was in my opinion amazing. He does change voices from time to time to match gender, but it is not poorly done, but the main character narration and the emotional range, expressing how to the character feels was fantastic. He was telling the story, not reading it, if that makes any sense.
There is a ton I could say, but in the end, these are fun books. It is a huge story and you age with the character during it & maybe to some they do have a childlike air about them, but the author makes it clear that his inspiration came from a time in his life as a kid where he was discovering some of the best fiction novels from the time, but by no means is a child's book and is not written at a low level. This is a long journey, with a lot of imagination and adventure & makes you think about what you would do in some instances, especially once the time period he is in is revealed. I would say let the world suck you in and if you are on the fence after the first one, go one more. You become invested in the story and characters.
My only knock is like some have said the naming conventions are difficult to follow, but not at all a deal breaker.
All in all, this was a really great series and very fun reads/listens. I am glad I found it and was able to enjoy so many hours listening.

Good, but not for everyone.
Revisado: 12-12-22
This was an interesting story, but it is more of a story about the human condition. As a fan of Peter Cawdron first contact books, this was in the same vein. More telling how we react as a species than the ET themselves.
With that said the main character is a British woman, if female narrators or accents are not for you than skip it. The character is also a bit …pretentious at times. This was admittedly a bit of a turn off, but not a deal breaker.
All in all the story was good, the narrator was very good, the character she plays may not be for you, but her ability to convey emotions was done very well. When she voiced the male characters it didn’t sell it for me as much, but that is no fault of hers and it again was not a deal breaker as you came to know them in that voice.
All in all it was good, but it is sci-fi more in name than in story. It’s a human condition story with sci-fi aspects.

Bones is no sidekick.
Revisado: 12-03-22
So far both Bones standalone stories I have listened to have been just as fun as the Maddock & Bones series. One of the reasons I like those stories is that Bones isn't a sidekick, both characters have their moments & it's more of a 60/40 than a 90/10 situation. These books drive that point home, Bones has no issue carrying a story on his own.
To be clear I know that these books are not going to be literary classics & am also aware that they are as far fetched as your typical action movie. With that said they are fun, quick & have likable characters. They address cool historical fiction, cryptozoology & alien storylines in a more grounded way, but don't pull a bait & switch at the end by making the conclusion overly mundane. These books for me are comfort food & if looked at through that lens they are awesome.
Lastly the bonus story at the end, is just awesome & would have loved to have seen that play out in a full length story.

It was a fun listen, they sent me in different directions & the voice acting was top notch. I wish the ending was a little bit more fulfilling but it was still a good quick listen. I recommend to those are fans of some crypto/sci-fi like media.

I just really enjoyed this, fun characters (I'm a Rex & Trip fan), a good mix of adventure & first contact. This last story particularly reminded me of Falling Skies the TV show. A fun read and a fun series.
