Shocking true story
Revisado: 05-04-25
Michelle writes about several phases of the sexual, physical and mental abuse she encountered during her life. She shares honest details, which are hard to hear, so I had to take listening breaks a few times. Her bravery shines throughout the book, especially at the end. She is an amazing woman.

Historia
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

Vulnerable honesty
Revisado: 08-12-24
Mike doesn’t seem to leave out any of the horrific details of what happens behind the walls of Scientology, even when it exposes his involvement in them. I appreciated the sequential storyline, from his early days to current day.

Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

A story everyone should know
Revisado: 05-23-24
The author recounts his painful truth of racial prejudice at its worst, and how he somehow is able to find joy in each day of 30 years falsely placed on death row. I cried and cheered for him throughout the book! I was shocked to learn about unjust Alabama laws in place and disgusted by the people who continue to enforce them.
The narrator perfectly read the authors story with all the emotions - well done!
I’d love to see a book written from the perspective of his best friend, Lester. I hope this is in the works!

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Serial killer true story with little media coverage
Revisado: 04-18-24
The author’s recount of a serial killer’s life from childhood to young adult killer is eye opening and sheds light on the nature vs nurture discussion.
The narrator, although has a pleasant articulate voice, didn’t speak as if he was the writer or the person in the action because he lacked intonation. Without hearing any emotion in an audible book, the listener has to rely on the written words to grasp the details of these horrific crimes.
Given the current ‘popularity’ of true crime, I was surprised to learn that this American serial killer’s story is relatively unheard. It seems that those connected to the case, who are still alive, don’t want to talk to allow privacy for the killer’s family.
This is a quick, easy listen - I recommend.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Historia
The practice of mindfulness is most often touted for its profound mind, body, and spirit benefits. Shelly Tygielski here shows that mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for spurring transformative collective action. In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

Relevant and Motivating
Revisado: 07-01-22
Shelly’s vulnerability is refreshing as she openly talks about low points in her life and how she leaned on community to lift herself up. She talks about examples of where her contributions to help others had a significant positive impact on her self worth. In my opinion, her views about setting intentions are spot on with Oprah’s teachings.
This book is for anyone who seeks an uplifting story and has an open mind about change for themselves and the world to help achieve peace, equality and joy.

Historia
Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Calming voice and helpful messages for parents
Revisado: 02-17-20
Using simple language and examples, Fred's book reinforced that love and acceptance are what all children need and that parents may make mistakes along the way and that's okay. Being able to hear his messages in his voice was a more powerful experience for me than by reading the book on my own. Highly recommend!
