Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Sure, I enjoyed myself with it, sort of reminded me of the old Ray Harryhaussen films, in particular the Sinbad films in terms of adventure. I also really enjoyed the character of Doc Savage and the sense of "manliness" of the whole narrative. Having said please understand that I do not equate manliness with misogyny or machismo so neither is really on display here just a strong male and masculine character, working with war buddies and sharing a story about his father and grandfather, so yeah masculinity abounds.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Doc Savage: Skull Island?

Lots of giant octopus, dinosaurs, head hunters, test of physical feats, but to me the most memorable were the opening scenes when they use barges and dirigibles to remove King Kongs body, which is something I'm sure I've wondered about at some point but there was something quite fascinating about spending time on the process that hooked me into the story, and served as a good way to introduce me to the world and set up the narrative. Just overall a smart way to begin the story.

Which scene was your favorite?

The opening, or Kong taking on the head hunters, really any scene with Kong, as much as I enjoyed Doc Savage Kong is still Kong, you know?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Well I don't want to keep saying the opening scene, but the truth is it's more of an adventure story than a moving one, although I will saying it was pretty touching once three generations of Savages finally shared time together imagining the interactions in these scenes in my head was pretty neat.

Any additional comments?

It's my first Doc Savage story so I don't know how it fits among that storied pedigree. I came for King Kong but honestly he's not in it that much, and when he does show up he is taken out for a while. But despite these two provisos, I actually really enjoyed the story, the narrator's voice is a like announcery but fit the story well.

Where does The Swarm rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I don't rank my books, but it would be right next to Herzog's Orca the Killer Whale (fantastic!) and both would be rated fairly high up.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Swarm?

I guess the bee swarm showing up in New York but saying that really gives a wrong impression, the book spends most of its time with the scientist trying to figure out where the bees come from, how they are different and what strategies if any can be used to stop them.

What about Charles Henderson Norman’s performance did you like?

He was clear cut and dry but something of a noir like cynicism in his voice that fit the clear cut, dry but noir like cynicism of the book.

If you could take any character from The Swarm out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Not sure it's those types of characters, the book is written almost like a journalist would write it, attention to the facts a clear presentation of the science ( as it was understood at the time) and an impression of the characters involved but nothing really in dept. idk it's kind of a strange question. Lol

Any additional comments?

Kind of short and that made me hesitate buying it. But I'm really glad I did can't say that my experience will be universal but I really appreciate this writers style and really enjoyed the story. So much in fact that I will make an effort to track a copy of the made for TV movie that was based on it.

What did you love best about Tales from Beyond the Pale: H. P. Lovecraft's The Hound?

The performance was a blast! Obviously most people that buy this will do so for the quasi reunion of Dennis Paoli, Stuart Gordon, Barbara Crampton and (possibly) Ezra Godden. The characters and gratuitous kink feels right at home with the 80's classics, The Reanimator, From Beyond and the later Dagon.,

What was most disappointing about Dennis Paoli and Stuart Gordon ’s story?

The story selection, obviously they did the best they could but this has never been a favorite Lovecraft story and this production didn't change my mind although I was quite open to it.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything. This is much more an audioplay, than a narration. And what sells the download for me was entirely the narrators/actors.

If you could rename Tales from Beyond the Pale: H. P. Lovecraft's The Hound, what would you call it?

Well that's the best title really, but if I had written the story idk the kinky tomb raiders get their comeuppance? Story titles shouldn't be put in my hands really...

Any additional comments?

It's really short so I'm not sure it's worth a credit, but for the two bucks or so that is the member prize it feel it's worth the prize, fairly fun for the performance even if the story itself wasn't great.

What did you like best about The Night Land? What did you like least?

Easily, this book has one of the best concepts ever written, the idea of a future world where the sun has died and humanity holds out in a giant metallic pyramid, protected by some ill-understood force from mountain sized monsters and other crepuscular beasts is fantastic. But not only is the premise imaginative the world is full of, if not realistic detail, then at least overflows with romantic, at times sentimental, creativity. My favorite creatures being the watchers and the slugs. Truly for it's imagination it is deserving of broader recognition.

However, as much as I wanted to love this novel, the style interferes too much with enjoyment by any reader, especially a modern one. The romantic sentiment helps with the adventurous spirit and tone but weighs it down in other sections - especially the whole chapter dedicated to the seemingly insane coquettish behaviors of his beloved after he rescues her from the smaller redoubt. Those that might be inclined to the story's romantic aspect will no doubt be turned off by it's historical misogyny. The affected speech is not only foreign to modern ears but would have been ill-constructed in the period it was trying to imitate. This affected English is not only distracting, but really impedes a lot of the action, much to the books detriment.

By the end of the novel the listener will hate the phrases, "in verity" and "as you can know/imagine/comprehend/grasps etc."

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Night Land?

The opening scenes in the the Night Lands, chapter 2-3, where the world of the the Night Land is set down for you. Certainly there are cool monsters and journey and vistas, seas of fire and such, but for me at least, the initial introduction was the best.

Would you be willing to try another one of Drew Ariana’s performances?

Hard to tell it was hard to listen to the whole story, the voice sounds a bit monotone, but I feel a lot of that was more the text, and that there was very little anyone could have done to liven it up. At any rate he got me through the whole book, which I could never finish on my own so that is worth something. I supposed I might give him another shot.

Could you see The Night Land being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Unknowns, these characters belong in a romantic and adventurous period that most major actors would look out of place in. Best you could maybe hope for is a Sean Bean type character but even he wouldn't really fit.

Maybe Ray Winstone?

Any additional comments?

Definitely for fans or students of weird fiction, not for the general consumption. It is a very tough read, and at time may make you drowsy, but if you can stand the monotone and try to re imagine what is at times poorly described, it becomes very impressive and rewarding.
