Over the top, hard to grasp explanations. I quickly remembered why I don't usually get inti the Sci fi genre. Narration was good and his believable voice kept me plugging through to the end.

Normally, I burn out half way through a Great Course audio but I was hooked and listened exclusively to this audio course through the end. An enormous volume of knowledge that was presented in a logical but compelling and intriguing way.

I really thought I would enjoy this after just finishing my first John Le Carre audio book -Silverview- which I listened to with great enjoyment. Tinker Tailor... was just too convoluted as a listening experience. Perhaps I will try reading it in the future. I did return the audio

A lot of knocks to the head...

and I too kept hitting my head against the wall wondering why continue with the story but I did and it wasn't terrible but I cannot recommend the book.
The book seemed over the top with nostalgic settings and characters from the first half of the 20th century.From New England patricians, Midwest farm lifestyle, sweet wise nuns, vaudeville grifters to delinquent boys homes were all very stereotypical as though pulled from The Saturday Evening Post. Duchess was not a believable character, Wooly's undiagnosed mental illness was poignant and Billy ..well I might have been more tolerant of Billy's character but for the narrator's approach to rapid breathless delivery of Billy's voice.

This story was very powerful for me and grabbed my attention. I did read some of the negative reviews and I would agree with some of their comments as far as being overly melodramatic, danger after danger like a telenovela but ultimately these writer's tactics did not distract from the story. It was an Odyssey and so there were adventures or evildoers at each turn. When we read or listen to literature aren't we after a story, a legend, maybe even a myth? What mother can not identify with what she might do if faced with the same conflict as Lydia's fight for the survival of her son and herself?
The narrator captured the characters of Lydia and her son very well. I enjoyed her Spanish dialogue better than her attempt at overly americanized dialogue. Easily overlooked and not a distraction.
I would recommend this book as a high school reading. I am not an English teacher but believe this book would capture an older teen's attention, prompt many questions and hopefully greater understanding of the conditions too many people are forced to flee from.
