Historia
From her home on the California coast, Dalva hears the broad silence of the Nebraska prairie where she was born, and longs for the son she gave up for adoption years before. Beautiful, fearless, tormented, at 45 she has lived a life of lovers and adventures. Now, Dalva begins a journey that will take her back to the bosom of her family, to the half-Sioux lover of her youth, and to a pioneering great-grandfather whose journals recount the bloody annihilation of the Plains Indians.

Dalva is strong & courageous. That Harrison could write of a woman’s tenderness, independence & sexuality is a revelation I would never have believed until I read this book.

Historia
From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Read this one instead of listening.
Revisado: 02-03-24
I actually read this Pulitzer Prize winner again in preparation for my Book Club. I liked it so much better & could easily recognize the brilliance of Diaz’writing.
It was so much more understandable, seeing the chapter headings & reading the unusual punctuation of Part II.
The Audible narrator (the director of the narrator?) did nothing to clarify that the discrepancies in narration were indicative of separate “voices” in the telling of the same story.
Skip the Audible version & go to your library.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Confusing at times. Enlightening at others.
Entertaining nonetheless.
Certainly has sent me to learn more… about the Netanyahus, about revisionism, about Sephardic Judaism and the Inquisition, about Zionist Israel.

Historia
NoViolet Bulawayo’s bold new novel follows the fall of the Old Horse, the long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a rumbustious nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup in November 2017 of Robert G. Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president of nearly four decades, Glory shows a country's imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices that unveil the ruthlessness required to uphold the illusion of absolute power and the imagination and bulletproof optimism to overthrow it completely.

Stunning Storytelling.
Revisado: 05-31-23
I loved this book. I loathed this story. It is brilliantly told. It is stunningly narrated. It should make you laugh and scare you to tears.
I have recommended it to several true readers (absorbers), but I think that Bulawayo’s telling is so much more powerful being told by Chung’s masterful narration.
Please listen… carefully.

Haunting. Mesmerizing.

The writing is clean and taut. Some beautiful alliteration and word pictures.
Story is haunting and mesmerizing, and horrifying but sadly “real.”

Separated from friends and family and haunted by personal demons, park ranger Anna Pigeon finds solace in the quiet ruins of the Anasazi civilization of Colorado's Mesa Verde. But the rugged beauty of the park and the mystery of the Anasazi are cruelly overshadowed by danger and death. Difficult to hear despite good EarPods
Revisado: 11-12-21
We wanted to read/hear this as we were visiting Mesa Verde.
The story is palatable. The characters unsympathetic. The conclusion is predictable.
All would be tolerable for the pleasure of hearing the references to places within the National Park and some valuable history of the Ancient Peoples who lived there.
But the narrator was horrible. Her intonation was so raspy and guttural and her habit of dropping her voice at the end of a sentence so pervasive, that listening on the car speakers was impossible even at maximum volume.
Using excellent ear pods, (we each wore one apiece) many sentences were unheard at the “period” of the sentence.
We kept asking one another, “ What did she say?!”
I generally listen to audiobooks at 1.5 speed.
To understand the majority of this book, I had to slow it to 1.0.
I will not listen to this narrator again.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Revisado: 09-12-20
Oh wow, was I ever ignorant? What an eye opener. I’m humbled. I’m even a bit ashamed. And yet I’ve listened and learned and perhaps can even be more core-compassionate to my brothers and sisters of color.
For my brothers and sisters of shared “caste” who continue to display behaviors and verbiage that purposely or inadvertently wound and that who seem hell bent on maintaining the status quo system, I do have some sad understanding of why they feel fear of losing whatever sense of superiority they have felt entitled.
Brava Ms. Wilkerson. Well done. Thank you.

Excellent story line with lots of details to ponder. Don’t miss the authors postscript which explains her ideas for some of them.
I’m not crazy about the reader however. Voice is very high pitched and overly dramatic.

Do not be fooled by the stunning opportunity to learn in-depth about Madam Curie. Do not be enticed by the previous credentials of Ms. Paula McLain. Do not believe for an instant that Audio Books would be so bold as to rip you off for 1credit for a one hour narrative. They will. They did. Never again will I purchase an Audio Exclusive but will save my precious $15.00 credits for a full length book. Beware!!
