Insights in the mind of a narcissist
Revisado: 01-08-25
Just like Michael Finkel, I was also drawn towards finding the truth. This book gives us an idea of how the mind of a narcissist works and how anyone could get manipulated by them.

Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Best narration, eerily closer to todays reality
Revisado: 11-13-24
“Slavery is freedom” the dirty politics that inspired Orwell to write the book, has definitely gotten closer to this fiction. Imposing the herd mentality, monitoring everything, going back to being conservative, that is what we are headed.

Historia
The definitive investigation into the greatest aviation mystery in history, with a startling hypothesis about who took the plane, where they took it, and how. On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared. A year later, still no trace of the plane - or the 239 people onboard - has been found. But why? In The Plane That Wasn't There, science journalist and CNN aviation analyst Jeff Wise sweeps aside the conspiracy theories and misconceptions and lays out, with clear concision, just what we know about the plane's fate - and what we don't.

The underrated insight
Revisado: 11-04-24
This book gives us the insight that the Netflix documentary failed us to give. This makes much sense but also is kind of scary how a common man has to pay between the wars of bigger countries. Unfortunately the families of the passengers might not get the answers.

Historia
Freakonomics showed how economic calculations can explain seemingly counterintuitive decision-making. Thinking, Fast and Slow helped listeners identify a host of small cognitive errors that can lead to miscalculations and irrational thought. In What the Luck?, statistician and author Gary Smith sets himself a similar goal, and explains - in clear, understandable, and witty prose - how a statistical understanding of luck can change the way we see just about every aspect of our lives.

The more extreme the luck the less likely it is to be repeated
Revisado: 10-22-24
I expected this book to explain in depth about the factor of luck. However this was mostly a compilation of examples of good luck and bad luck with an answer to why it happens “Regression to the mean”. I’d have loved to read more about how regression to the mean occurs rather than where it occurred. But it was a nice read and it helped me to not fall for the illusion of luck and to think of it in a way where no matter which end of the luck you receive, it will always regress to the mean.

Awareness itself is not enough
Revisado: 07-09-24
It was fascinating to go through the Ed’s journey, his childhood, Lindsay, CIA and Moscow. If it wasn’t for Snowden, it’d have never come to your attention that the government is accessing our data, without our consent, no matter how insignificant. This incident is just a small snowball being rolled down a mountain. Recent Facebook hearings are a proof that the efforts of Snowden didn’t go in vain.
The way in which Lindsay was tortured by the feds was truly horrific. This should be our wake up call, that data privacy is somewhat an illusion and we still have a long battle to fight in order to win this war against surveillance.

Historia
We would all be better off if everyone saw mathematics as a practical ally. Sadly, most of us fear maths and seek to avoid it. This is because mathematics doesn't have good 'people skills' - it never hesitates to bluntly point out when we are wrong. But it is only trying to help! Mathematics is a friend which can fill the gaps in what our brains can do naturally. Luckily, even though we don't like sharing our own mistakes, we love to listen to tales about what happens when maths errors make the everyday go horribly wrong....

Historia
God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers.

Excellent message disguised as dark humour
Revisado: 02-19-24
Even though I'm not a catholic I was somehow excited to hear about Jesus's entry like he was Han Solo in Return of Jedi. Although filled with humour, this book had a lot of deep messages. It is fascinating to see that everything sums up to a simple saying "love everyone" but humankind, being the most intellectual species on earth, fails to follow it. Best quote was "If you want sympathy, look in the dictionary between sh*t and Syphis" SOMEBODY PRINT IT ON A TSHIRT ALREADY

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Spectacular book
Revisado: 02-06-24
As a true crime fanatic, this was a truly engaging book which showed the two sides of Chicago fair, on one side burnham with his architectural experience, ferris wheel, the cold storage building fire. On the other side how Holmes lured people to his hotel and murdered them brutally. The back and forth between these sides was the best part, as you get to see two ends of a human spectrum.
