Listen - This may be an awesome book - I only made it about 7 hours in before I returned it. The Writing team Illona Andrews is one of my favorites, Hidden Legacies, and Kate Daniels are both winners in my book and Blood Heir is a great start to a series BUT.... In all the books listed above the world-building is engaging and draws you in. In this book (at least till hour 7), there are gross rednecks, ill-defined magic's, and a Blueblood mage that comes across as kind of rapey (I am sure that gets better but his introduction is not great). but what really got me was...

Spoilers...

About 7 hours in when Rose has to give her suiter a challenge she sends her brother, who was almost killed by monsters in the forest the day before, into the forest for a game of cat hide and seek. I mean it would make sense if she was the bad guy and wanted her brother to "Accidentally" die but other than that, what it just seems like... bad writing, I guess.

I understand that the book may get better as it goes on but I am going to give this series a pass.

When I started I was really sure I wasn't going to like this book.

I am not going to say that I have read a ton of books from the perspective of a bard, but in the one I have read before the MC always seemed to come off sleazy and unlikable, so I I tend to give them a pass. Also, I generally do not to like books with more than 1 narrator because I find it distracting. That's is just personal preference.

BUT - like many others, the disclaimer caught my attention and I thought I should give this a try and it turns out this is actually a really good book! The main character is flawed but likable, the story is compelling, and Lars makes a fiddle playing bard seem cool!

The shift from narrator to narrator and back was/is a bit jarring to me - but I got used to it by the end of the book. Also the fiddle music that was played in the background added to making the bard seem cool, rather than being totally distracting, as music can be (has been) in other books.

All and all, a good book well produced - I suggest giving it a try.

Honestly, I don't write many reviews but I like to comment on the RPG-lite books I find that good enough to listen to again (most of them are 1 and done type books). This book has a solid premise and main character who is a good guy who is dealing with his own issues and without becoming a stereotype.

All and all worth the listen.

I am not a regular commenter, I only really write comments when a book goes so far beyond my expectations that I feel like I have to say something. This book is extraordinarily well written, and the voice acting was amazing.

I am not normally a 'Space Adventure' book kind of guy. Normally I just get board with space books. Generally in my experience has been "Yeah a star, Yeah another star..." It's a bit like like Nascar and left turns.

Denis made exploring the cosmos exciting and believable.

P.S. if you are listening to the sample audio - don't worry they screwy computer voice the at read did (and did well) only lasts for for about 3 minutes after the sample ends. The Bob gets used to the voice program and start to sound normal again.
