Great backstory.
Revisado: 03-31-25
I really enjoyed seeing where these characters began. It gave me a greater appreciation of their motivations and aspirations. Collins explained some unanswered questions raised in the first books. I enjoyed Sunrise very much.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Michelle Alexander‘s book is a masterpiece of scholarly work. The data is presented quite clearly and simply, and the case is well made against the so-called war on drugs and the resulting mass incarceration of black and brown men. Solutions aren’t easy but Ms. Alexander leaves us optimistic. Everyone needs to read this book.

This story is so engaging, you don’t want to stop listening. Zetta Elliott has spun a tale filled with history, social commentary, and of all things TIME TRAVEL! The characters are well-developed and real. The protagonist, Jenna, is a young woman of great strength and conviction. I really like her. This is a wonderful read.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Beautiful allegory!
Revisado: 07-11-18
I really love this story, especially the way it’s read. The voices were not what I would’ve imagined in my head. That made it very nice. The story itself is quite captivating and seems to me it speaks to a human condition more so than an alien or robotic robotic one. I like that there were no racial discussion or description. Often in science fiction, people of color are either left out or relegated to the lowest rung. That didn’t appear to be the case here. I could also equate the murderbot with a human who has been subjected to a lot of war, like a terrorist or someone growing up in a war torn society where violence is all you know. It was a very satisfying ending to the story. Now I would actually like to read the words.

Philip Pullman has masterfully pulled us back into the alternate reality of the England created in the Golden Compass. We meet new mythical characters that are familiar and frightening and never boring. Best of all, we get to know and fall in love with Malcolm and Alice. This is a great read for YA and adults, alike.
