The audio is so good that it’s like a film in my mind, but if an actual show came out tomorrow using the same audio I’d happily watch that too. Glad there’s already a season 2, so I don’t need to wait. Audible should definitely keep going with this one!

I was waiting and hoping for a new installment in this series, so when it popped up on Audible I was so excited! I follow most of Alices’ series, but this is one of my favorites. I love that we got to see more of Indigo and Sy in this installment, and I wonder if they might even get their own book in the future???? :) I’m also hoping for some more lore and world-building that will help explain why the chimaeras are all so different (especially Lake!), where they come from, and what is up with their third form. Although it wasn’t discussed much in this book, I’m also dying to find out what sort of experimentation was done on Declan in his childhood that gave him his boosted reflexes and ultimately made him a more capable hunter. I assume he’s part-chimaera somehow, but much of that hasn’t been mentioned since Lake found those documents with his name on them in book 1. Thank you, Alice, for continuing their story! I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for more!

Enjoyed as always, although Day definitely annoyed me at times. Overall, it was probably a pretty accurate portrayal of the sorts of insecurities that come as a result of trauma, so I can appreciate that. Love Jackson!

This book expanded upon the first one quite smoothly with more world building and character development that feels natural and not forced. I love all the new characters we’ve acquired along the way. Tbh, the “evil uncle” narrative felt a little overdone when it was first revealed, but I can tell there’s going to be more to it once the whole truth comes out. The ending was satisfying and compelling (although of course also frustrating, being another cliffhanger of sorts). Despite their concerns about Roland, I’m also excited for Tris and Bet, who finally have each other and no longer need to hide it (or most other things) anymore. Onto book 3 I go!

An intriguing standalone story

This story surprised me in its complexity and suspense. This was probably one of the most stressful of Alice Winters’ books, (especially towards the end!) but it was definitely intriguing, with realistic themes interwoven among urban fantasy. No fantastical creatures in this one, of course, but the “abilities” theme is pretty well-done… although I do have some lingering questions about why the red threads show up when they do, and why it’s not just from the first moment of meeting someone? What triggered the red and black threads to finally appear for Bishop and Alex, just the act of seeing each other again after a long period of separation? How far back does “fate” predict these things, and how much can people shift their own fates unknowingly? Alas, these are issues that haunt any story based around the themes of fate and free will. I enjoyed this book and I’ll probably listen to is again.

I love almost anything Alice Winters puts out, but this is an intriguing new series with a very interesting premise! Granted, the MCs are relatively similar to those in the Assassin’s Guide series, but I always enjoyed that series a lot. I would love to see Alice branch out and write characters that differ a little more, to be honest. However, this book never failed to entertain. There are some plot points that need more explanation, but perhaps she will focus on those in the next book(s). Thank you for this book, Alice! I’m very excited to see these characters return for more and to learn more about their world!

I was very excited to find this addition to the Mage’s Familiar series! It kind of ends on a cliff hanger, so I’m assuming more are on the way.

An Interesting Premise and Entertaining Read

I enjoy almost all of Alice Winters’ series, so I’m glad there are at least two books in existence for now; hopefully she adds more to their story in the future. This book was full of twists that I didn’t see coming, although for some reason Reggie’s hazing of Hiro made me cringe, (probably as intended). This series is funny but also action-packed with an interesting premise and I enjoyed the murder mystery aspect. The romance felt a tad rushed, but not distractingly so.

I love most of Alice Winter’s writing so far (the VRC series, “Assassins Guide” series, etc.), but this one wasn’t as incredible as the others. The narrator’s performance had a lot of extra-long pauses in places that didn’t seem appropriate, and there’s an excessive amount of exasperated sighing (or at least that’s what it sounded like to me). The MC’s family was hilarious, and it felt like the plot finally picked up halfway through with the introduction of some more entertaining characters and character dynamics. The romance also wasn’t as beefed-out as it could have been, since this is a standalone book and not a series like most of her other titles.

Hoping that Alice Winters decides to continue this series! I love the main characters and the magic is well done in my opinion.
