Historia
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

amazing
Revisado: 05-28-23
The simplicity and matter-of-factness with which this story is told and read is just astounding. Being a vegan, this story hit me especially hard, however, it hit my meat-eating husband just as hard. It will be difficult for anyone with any sense of awareness of the sentience of animals to NOT be very impacted by this book. Truly brilliant storytelling. I can't recommend this book enough.

Historia
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

One of the best zombie books.... heck, one of the best books period.... that I've listened to in a long time. This author is a wonderful voice in fiction and the depths to which she took a zombie story was just phenomenal. This story went places I didn't think it would go and spoke to the human condition much better than many other books I've read. I simply can't say enough good things about this book. I look forward to reading more from this author. (P.S. - the narrator was FANTASTIC! made an amazing story even better.)

Oh. My. Goodness. Simply dreadful.
Revisado: 05-21-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
No one.
Would you ever listen to anything by Drac Von Stoller again?
No.
NoNoNoNoNoNoNoNo and No.
What didn’t you like about Ted Brooks’s performance?
Everything.
To be fair, he didn't have a lot to work with. it would have been very hard for ANYONE to have read this well.
What character would you cut from 5 Short Stories from '31 Horrifying Tales from the Dead': Born a Serial Killer, Castle Drac Von Stoller, and More?
Every single one of them.
Any additional comments?
This was, hands down, THE WORST audio book I have ever listened to. I'm convinced that it was written by a 12 year old. I really don't even know where to start on how bad this book is. The serial killer story was absurd. Written like instructions: "Johnny took the gun. Johnny blew her head of. Johnny got back in the car and drove away. Johnny got to his house. Johnny went inside", etc, etc, ad nauseam. And the "Castle Drac Von Stoller" ditty - oy! - I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny but the story was ridiculous and the narrator was a riot. Between the dialog that felt like it was written by my cat, his HORRIBLE Italian accent (hint: putting an "a" at the end of every word does not an Italian accent make), and his downright hysterical "dracula" voice (think Count Chocula - and to make matters worse, the accent kept coming and going!) I wasn't sure what to laugh at first. I'm not even going to go on with the rest of the stories.... trust me, they did not get any better.
I truly hate to give such a bad review because writing a really good story is a difficult thing to do and I admire those who even have the courage to try. But I cannot, in good conscience, give this book any more than 1 star. If I may, some advice to the author - work on constructing a better story. Flush out the characters a little more. Saying everyone's name over and over again is not necessary and is incredibly annoying for the reader (you can say "Johnny walked in the room. He sat down in the chair", not "Johnny walked into the room. Johnny sat down in the chair", etc.). Save the stereotypes, they make the story seem juvenile and amateurish. If writing is your passion, then I wish you much luck in your future endeavors and I hope that your stories get better.

Revisado: 05-20-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Umm, no one.
What was most disappointing about Matt Shaw’s story?
This was just hardcore porn trying to pass itself off as a story.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from SickER Bastards?
Just about all of the sex scenes.
Any additional comments?
Let me say that I generally really like Matt Shaw, and I liked the first book ("Sick Bastards"), but this was one of the worst sequels I've ever read. This was just a few hours of graphic sex looking for a story. It would have been laughable if it weren't so cringe-worthy. The sex scenes were obnoxiously plentiful, drawn-out, and so obviously gratuitous that it left me wondering why he even bothered to try to construct a story around them. In the first book, at least the majority of the sex scenes made some kind of sense to the story. This one... not so much. I've never wanted 3 hours and 31 minutes of my life back as much as I want the 3 hours and 31 minutes I spent listening to this tripe. I will definitely read other Shaw books, but this one was falls squarely in the "miss" column for me.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes.
What did you like best about this story?
Very interesting from beginning to end. I was never bored.
Have you listened to any of Chris Barnes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. I don't mind his voice or his performance skills but I thought that he was the wrong person to read this specific book. The way he pronounced some of the words, with his heavy accent, made them almost laughable. Took away from some of the tension in the story.
Any additional comments?
I wasn't sure what to expect but the story held up pretty well. It was pretty gory and explicit in places but it worked - it didn't feel out of place. The ending was not what I was expecting either but I liked it! If you like gross, sexually explicit, and interesting stories then I'd recommend this. Be warned: It is EXTREMELY sexually explicit in some spots.

Historia
Darkness, both literal and psychological, holds its own unique fascination. Despite our fears, or perhaps because of them, listeners have always been drawn to tales of death, terror, madness, and the supernatural, and no more so than today when a wildly imaginative new generation of dark dreamers is carrying on in the tradition of Poe and Lovecraft and King, crafting exquisitely disturbing literary nightmares that gaze without flinching into the abyss - and linger in the mind long after.

good example of a narrator making all the diff
Revisado: 04-06-15
Any additional comments?
Very interesting stories by some of the best writers in horror fiction. These stories were made even more wonderful by the narrator. He is PHENOMENAL. I cannot compliment him enough. There were some fabulous stories here and then there were some okay stories that Mr. May's narration made fabulous.
Okay, I'll stop gushing over the narrator now and say a little something about the stories.... I found about 95% of them to be really really good. Obviously, a few really stood out, like "Little America" and "The House on Ashley Ave." (of which I could have read more of - I hope the author is going to write a novel about the very interesting Meerfield Group). There were 2 or 3 stinkers, but overall this anthology is well worth the money.

Authors just shouldn't read their own books
Revisado: 03-08-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Hard core Sigler fans
Would you recommend Blood Is Red to your friends? Why or why not?
Absolutely not.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Scott Sigler?
Anyone else.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment
Any additional comments?
This was just dreadful. I was expecting much more after reading the reviews. I guess every author has his legion of fans but I am definitely not one of Siglers. The stories were juvenile and pedantic. And his infernal rantings in-between each story almost drove me to drink. But the worst was his narration. Authors just should never read their own stories - it never goes well. This applies to all authors, even Steven King. Just pay someone to do it right. It would have made a huge difference in the quality of this audiobook. I also wish that Audible would offer redacted versions of compilation books like these - ones that don't have the authors preface to each story.

Yes, a younger friend though.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was good but exactly what I expected.
Did Wayne June do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
This novel was like Pumpkinhead meets Stand by Me. Well written, a little drawn out at times, but nicely done. Worth the money.
