Kathy Garver, the teenage heartthrob from the hit series Family Affair (1966 - 1971), was no one-hit wonder, but a talented actress who appeared in such classic films as Night of the Hunter and The Ten Commandments long before she became a television icon.

Historia
In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career - six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, 20 Wimbledon championships, 39 grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes". She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Double Fault!
Revisado: 08-19-21
I love and admire Billie Jean King. However, this audiobook was quite disappointing. The prose is plodding at times, and needs polish. Billie Jean speaks from the heart, and often from the gut...However, this 18 hour narrative could have or rather should have been read by a professional reader. - Drue Bates

A wonderful, beautiful, brilliant First Lady published a clinker. How disappointing!
I understand that this is not how this book was received by most readers, listeners and critics.

Historia
The China Lake missile range is located in a huge stretch of the Mojave Desert, about the size of the state of Delaware. It was created during the Second World War, and has always been shrouded in secrecy. But people who make missiles and other weapons are regular working people, with domestic routines and everyday dilemmas, and four of them were Karen Piper's parents, her sister, and - when she needed summer jobs - herself.

Awful. Not about missiles.

One of those titles that totally misleads. Very little here about missiles or the women who were involved in developing. Rubbish!

Historia
In The Field of Blood, Joanne B. Freeman recovers the long-lost story of physical violence on the floor of the US Congress. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources, she shows that the Capitol was rife with conflict in the decades before the Civil War. Legislative sessions were often punctuated by mortal threats, canings, flipped desks, and all-out slugfests. When debate broke down, congressmen drew pistols and waved Bowie knives. One representative even killed another in a duel. Many were beaten and bullied in an attempt to intimidate them into compliance, particularly on the issue of slavery.

Author's recent interview on C-Span was misleading puffery. Little, if any of this book is about actual events. The narrative if mostly fill; i.e. history, as told elsewhere...

Historia
Recruited by the US Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than 10,000 women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of codebreaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them.

Disappointing!
Revisado: 03-31-19
Title is misleading. Book supposedly is about codes and the remarkable women who deconstructed them during WW2. Not about codes or code solving. It's a dull, gossipy diary about the women who worked on these projects, the rooms where they worked, who got married, etc. Yawwwnnnnnnn. Awful!

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
At 14, Amber could boast of killing her guinea pig, threatening to burn down her home, and seducing men in exchange for gifts. She used the tools she had available to get what she wanted, and she didn't care about the damage she inflicted. A few miles away, Lenny Skutnik was so concerned about the life of a drowning woman that he jumped into the ice-cold river to save her. How could Amber care so little about others' lives, while Lenny cared so much?
