Historia
In this moving, hilarious, and insightful memoir, Laurie Woolever traces her path from a small-town childhood to working at revered restaurants and food publications, alternately bolstered and overshadowed by two of the most powerful men in the business. But there’s more to the story than the two bold-faced names on her resume: Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain.

Harrowing and Honest
Revisado: 04-07-25
Woolever fearlessly shares just how unsavory, lost and sad the life of an addict can be. A frustrating listen as you struggle to understand why she is so self-destructive, selfish and lost throughout. The contrast and similarities between her bosses is interesting but low key in the grand scheme of things. I hope she continues to fight off her demons.

Historia
Julian the Apostate, nephew of Constantine the Great, was one of the brightest yet briefest lights in the history of the Roman Empire. A military genius on the level of Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great, a graceful and persuasive essayist, and a philosopher devoted to worshipping the gods of Hellenism, he became embroiled in a fierce intellectual war with Christianity that provoked his murder at the age of thirty-two, only four years into his brilliantly humane and compassionate reign.

Making Ancient Rome Relatable
Revisado: 01-21-25
Gore Vidal’s 'Julian' is a masterclass in historical fiction, and the audiobook brings the fourth-century Roman world vividly to life for modern listeners. Vidal’s skill in humanizing historical figures transforms the distant, marble-faced Emperor Julian into a compelling, relatable character whose struggles and ideals resonate even today. The narration enhances this effect, imbuing the story with nuance and poignancy that highlight Julian’s philosophical battles and tragic fate. This magnificent work captures the grandeur and fragility of ancient Rome while offering timeless reflections on power, faith, and individuality. I highly recommend this captivating audiobook.

Historia
Lincoln is the cornerstone of Gore Vidal’s fictional American chronicle, which includes Burr; 1876; Washington, D.C.; Empire; and Hollywood. It opens early on a frozen winter morning in 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln slips into Washington, flanked by two bodyguards. The future president is in disguise, for there is talk of a plot to murder him. During the next four years there will be numerous plots to murder this man who has sworn to unite a disintegrating nation.

Moving and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 11-21-24
A moving and heartbreaking portrayal of the one American who gave the very most in sacrifice to the notion of liberty and a democratic Republic. Gore Vidal, who I did not think possibly could surpass his opus "Burr" has done so magnificently with "Lincoln." This novel is a must-read for anyone who wants to try to understand the dimension, character and brilliance that Lincoln brought to the leader ship that l, frankly, we did not deserve and sadly have not lived up to.

Historia
A provocative and penetrating investigation into the rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, whose infamous duel left the founding father dead and turned a sitting vice president into a fugitive. In the summer of 1804, two of America's most eminent statesmen squared off, pistols raised, on a bluff along the Hudson River. That two such men would risk not only their lives but the stability of the young country they helped forge is almost beyond comprehension. Yet we know that it happened.

Not Even-Handed History
Revisado: 06-24-24
An interesting book, however, not exactly a straight work of historical fact. It is written in more of a novel style and seems to have it in for Burr from the get-go. Entertaining, but hardly something one should view as a historical or fair foundational work.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

The book had so much, Stephen King‘s trademark Turner phrase and overall entertaining storytelling. Not as good as “Full Dark No Stars,” but certainly worth your time.

Historia
Anthony Bourdain, author of Kitchen Confidential, once again brings to light the inner workings of the "culinary underbelly" in his bold reinvention of the traditional Christmas story. At once risqué and charming, A Chef's Christmas is sure to bring holiday cheer to those who make dinner and those who only make reservations.

Historia
In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up. This is the shocking true story of an American dream that turned into a nightmare beyond imagining for the Lutz family, who were forced to flee their new home in terror.

A Tribute to Gullibility
Revisado: 11-03-23
The writing is going for “In Cold Blood,” but it’s more like bad cold cuts. A fraudulent story cooked up to get Lutz out of financial troubles, it strains credulity. A gullible America ate this half-baked pie of flies. Narration is good, but it’s a turkey of a story.

Intriguing
Revisado: 02-06-23
Langella has led an unusually interesting life, and this memoir is entertaining and surprising. Replete with dishy details about past trysts and run-ins with an august cast of characters, the book is more interesting when he reveals his own strangeness of character. No Whoopi Goldberg mentioned, either—which is surprising.

Historia
In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable, confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma even to those close to him. Tony’s devoted crew knew him best, and no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and producer, Tom Vitale.

An Open Wound
Revisado: 01-05-22
This book is about open wounds—Tom’s, Bourdain’s friends, his fans, and of course, Tony’s. A must-listen/read for interesting and often uncomfortable insights into Anthony Bourdain—brilliant, funny, cruel, somewhat misunderstood—and all too human. Tom Vitale is brave to be this open and vulnerable. I highly recommend this book, and hope for his sake, time heals all wounds.
