This was a set book at school. I enjoyed reliving the story. This book would not be published today due to the language, but the story still remains a great escape.

A sort of love story
Revisado: 10-25-24
I was expecting a swooping Japanese historical saga, I am a Michener fan. It was a short story about love. I should research my purchases.

Historia
First published in 1963, James A. Michener's gripping chronicle of the social and political landscape of Afghanistan is more relevant now than ever. Combining fact with riveting adventure and intrigue, Michener follows a military man tasked, in the years after World War II, with a dangerous assignment: finding and returning a young American woman living in Afghanistan to her distraught family after she suddenly and mysteriously disappears.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-26-24
Not much history in this one. It’s basically a repressed horny American searching for a confused horny American. The quality of this story cannot be compared to some of the other Michener jewels. I wouldn’t recommend this one if you are looking for a thrilling historical adventure with engaging characters.

Mexican bullfighting
Revisado: 04-10-24
The majority of this story is about bullfighting in Mexico. It doesn’t really delve into Mexican history like most of the other Michener stories. It is not the most memorable Michener novel.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age.

Not Michener’s best.
Revisado: 03-22-24
I found the characters to be shallow and didn’t really become interested in their story. This book lacked emotion, I think. I can’t really put my finger on it, it was basically a history lesson. Hawaii, Alaska and the Covenant are much better reads.

This is the 7th Michener book I have listened to. I liked it. It’s not as good as Hawaii or Alaska, but still worth a listen. It makes the hours fly by while I work in my studio.

Horrible audio
Revisado: 10-12-23
The female narrator is awful. She sounds like someone on the brink of tears or tantrum, constantly. Painful to listen to. At times the audio is in whispers and one cannot make out what is being said.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Surprisingly enjoyable
Revisado: 05-16-23
I am not a scientific fiction fan. So, I was rather surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Some parts had me laughing out loud, others impressed me with the knowledge and imagination the author has. I would recommend this book to all. It is a real sit back, relax and enjoy the story kind of experience.
