Historia
By the time he was 19, Frank Schaeffer’s parents had achieved global fame as best-selling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands and publish his own best seller. But while coming of age as a rising evangelical star, Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, and as a result, he experienced a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his journey out of the fold - even if it meant losing everything.

I became formally a Christian at age 16 at a big huge Baptist church in California. Your father is pretty important right then, I’m 70 so that’ll give you an idea. I feel like I was only vaguely aware of what was going on because my later to become husband and I belonged to this sort of youth group across the street. it was seen by the church as shady or something. But thank God for the pastor who protected us and understood why we needed to be different. At age 70 I totally get now how important that was. The church blew apart and we were introduced to a six week teaching on the sermon on the mount by Dr. Dallas Willard who had to be in his early to mid 40s at the time. I think he saved our Christian life for the future. Later on we both ended up in the Catholic Church and somehow managed to handle the kind of craziness that you were talking about in evangelicalism. It is very refreshing to have somebody like you write about that. As a marriage and family therapist now I have rescued a whole lot of people who were damaged by that kind of Christianity. It definitely had kind of a cultish feeling. I recognize so many of the things that you talk about in your book. But somehow God saved me in the middle of all of it and in spite of some of the terrible things that I’ve been through in churches I still have a very strong relationship with God and his Christ. That’s a real testimony if you knew what I had been through but I can imagine that you wouldn’t have any trouble at all Recognizing my story. Again thanks for this book and may God continue to float you along in his journey. I’m going to recommend this to my book club. Some of them will really recognize this and it probably would be helpful to them.

Thank you for writing it. Your story is compelling and accurate in ways that will escape many. In 2016 after DJT Won the election, I was sleeping on my couch which I had been doing for about two years. My husband had walked out on me to be with another woman and it was so unexpected and so not like anything I could imagine him doing, even to this day. I was by myself except for with my dog and I was shaking that Your uncle had become president. He is so much like my dad who is now passed away in 2017. My husband ended up divorcing me which I’m sure he regrets now because the woman who had enticed him is I am sure a sociopath but in a moment of clarity he came in to the house and said “we just elected your dad for president “. He obviously was seeing it just like I had and I knew it was going to be huge trouble. When I heard that you had checked yourself in to a hospital, I could totally understand. It’s amazing how much crap people can get away with and my dad went to the grave shaking his fist and still seems to control my siblings to some degree in their treatment of me. It has gotten better but I know that it can go bad. In someways it was very difficult for me to listen to your story but at the same time I found myself saying there’s another person in the world who gets it. Whether the fame was there or not the same kind of attitudes and evil were in my life. Your book somehow has left me feeling a little less alone because no matter how much you try to explain the stuff to people they just usually don’t get it. I’m a therapist to and I have specialize in seeing people who have personality disorder and parents and bosses. I have run a group. I’ve had a saying that I call people in this group members of my ugly club. The password to this club is “I know exactly what you’re talking about “. If a person says anything other than that when you start telling your story, I’ve told them it’s best to just back out and not tell your story because there will be all kinds of excuses for peoples behavior. This has been a very rough time for me to have Donald Trump be president And I feel like a great deal of anxiety that he could get back in. However I am living in a rural community now instead of the Los Angeles megalopolis. The people up here remind me of the people in Asheville right now taking care of one another. Even though I know it’s a mixed bag in terms of who’s supporting who for president, We tend not to talk about it that much so that nobody falls out. I’m 70 now so I need that support because I’m on my own. Well this might be a weird review and may be too personal but for anybody else who wants to read this book it is more accurate than you can imagine. Thanks again Mary for your bravery or whatever the heck it is that caused you to write this. Good luck to all of us

Historia
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

Worried
Revisado: 07-18-24
I was a Protestant for 27 years and now a Catholic for 27 years. I have a Bachelors degree from UCLA and Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary. I was fortunate to be able to take a class on Dietrich Bonhoffer And a class on Karl Barth from the most brilliant and insightful Dr. Ray Anderson who has now passed. My biggest concern about this reading is although it is not proclaimed seems to be upholding the negativity of the republican party. I was Republican for 50 years and switched to independent in the last two years. It’s almost as if Christians have been so led to see “evil“ in Democrats that it runs the risk of inciting hatred. The Lord Jesus has never called us to hatred. The Germans are not to be hated but understood. I had a German friend when I was at UCLA and at one point in time she opened up to me about the pain Germans feel still so many years after the Nazi regime. I feel those people were gullible for a whole lot of reasons and we are being gullible too. I’m concerned that this is not confronting the evil and vileness of Donald Trump. Donald Trump is not someone I can follow and even if I have to vote Democrat to keep him out of office I will. I cannot Bring myself to see how he would be nearly worshiped by my brothers and sisters in Christ. It is horrifying to me. We need to find the balance again in this country and the maturity of being able to disagree without villainizing and risking some kind of Civil War by the end of the year. Other than these concerns Metaxas is clearly an expert on Bonhoeffer and it was a nice refresher to hear the greatness of his theology and ideas. Saint Pope John Paul II declared that Bonhoeffer would have been canonized had he been in the Catholic Church. Maybe I am jumping the gun because it’s pretty hard to keep your head straight in these troubled times. I just feel there needs to be extra caution about the hate mongering that has been going on in our country for way too long. At age 70 I have to say I have never seen anything like it in politics before. It does help me to understand Germany much better. I had to smile when I saw that God had called Cardinal Ratzinger to become pope. I felt like he was redeeming the years the locust have eaten.

I have an immense new respect for the game.

Now he tells the story of Trump’s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency.

Scary
Revisado: 12-28-22
This book was very scary in terms of how close we came to losing our democracy. To get a blow by blow account in this book gave me a great sense of what was going on behind the scenes even though I intuited a great deal of it. My Late father had the same diagnosis as Trump and Jonathan Karl unknowingly it seems spelled out his symptoms over and over. Revealing actual actions of people who are named and then of course it comes out in the January 6 Hearings has really rounded out my knowledge. I wish Trump followers that I know including in my family would either read or listen to this book. I can give it a try but that’s about it. I’m definitely taking my flag back. I’ve been a lifelong Republican but just moved up to the mountains from LA County and decided to become an independent. That way I get to avoid being a RINO. it makes me very sad that this could happen in our country but also it’s a great wake up call. I’m truly one of those people whose ancestry is responsible for making the United States of America. When I hear these people acting like patriots I want to tell them That you need to honor my ancestors that fought in the American revolution and founded the early colonial towns starting with the Massachusetts bay colony on both sides of my family. Thanks for writing this book and I highly recommend it.

There is plenty of wisdom to go around in this book. I’m a Therapist and have recommended the book already before finishing it. I’ve recently become certified in complex trauma treatment. A lot of times there are books that can be a kind of how to during an after recovery and this will be one of those books that I would recommend. I like the gentle simplicity combined with a firm and somewhat stern set of recommendations. Once trauma has been addressed and the person who has experienced it can come to terms with the impact Of trauma on their lives they become very open to recommendations as to how to live a better life for themselves. I’ve always been curious about scripture telling us to love God self and other. Pretty much everyone as we grow up is missing one of those three elements. People who have been traumatized usually don’t know how to love themselves and this is a good book to not only learn how to do that but the rationale for actually doing it.

Billy Summers was the book chosen for my book club this month. I’m 67 female and when I saw it was a 16 hr listen I was afraid I might not finish in time. What a surprise! This book kept me up past my bedtime many a night. It’s my first Stephen King and I’m sure now it won’t be me last. Of course I have heard of Stephen King and now believe he deserves all the accolades he has received. Thanks to my book club for introducing this Author to me. Yep, Billy is out there somewhere, maybe checking into the Overlook now and again for a drink!

Beautiful
Revisado: 02-25-22
I read this book 20 years ago and it is even more beautiful today. It was nice to see the book was included so I didn’t have to spend a credit. This book is medicine for the soul and is better at the understanding of how God uses our suffering for wholeness and wisdom and love than any straightforward theological book or paper.
