Historia
Even though men as a group have power, individual men often feel powerless. These contradictory experiences contribute to men’s hurting—hurting others and being hurt. Based on more than fifteen years of research, Keith E. Edwards, PhD, illuminates men’s masking, unmasking, and becoming to help men develop their own authentic masculinity.

For anyone who cares about any men this is for YOU
Revisado: 02-13-24
Keith does such an incredible job taking very complex, nuanced, and confusing ideas about what it is to be "a man" in the modern world and presents them with kindness and compassion in a way that anyone can understand. This book is truly for men and anyone who loves or cares about men.
Dr. Edwards uses his research as a launching point. Namely, his groundbreaking study where he interviewed 10 very different men about what it is to "be a man" and analyzed their ideas -and then did it again every 5 years for the last 15 years. That alone would be fascinating, but he enriches and further humanizes the learning by including personal anecdotes as well as wisdom gleaned from other thought-leaders and experts in the field.
In the end, this book is about learning how to see the difference between the person we really are when we feel save, and free to be ourselves, and the person we feel we're supposed to be. We all wear masks, but we don't have to. This book helped me see that.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Mind changing.

I am having a hard time imagining a book that has more fundamentally left me feeling changed. It is beautifully written, making difficult material approachable and with a voice more kind than it really had any business having.
I’m buying the physical book to read and notate.

Historia
Published in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall uprising on June 28, 1969, Indecent Advances investigates how queer men navigated a society that criminalized them and displayed little compassion for the violence they endured. Polchin shows, with masterful insight, how this discrimination was ultimately transformed by activists to help shape the burgeoning gay rights movement in the years leading up to Stonewall.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 04-05-20
It is absolutely heartbreaking that this incredibly well-written and painstakingly-researched book even has to exist. But it does.
Despite the gruesome subject matter of the book, it was rendered with obvious care and attention. I highly recommend to anyone searching to better understand human history and violence.

Historia
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

One might think this book is about Putin and his kleptocracy -and a lot of it is- but really this book is about the “resource curse” and it’s absolutely corrupting effects through the use of Russia as a case study. It’s through-provoking, but more than that, it’s action-provoking.

Historia
As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

A story that opens eyes.
Revisado: 08-14-19
As a straight, white, cisgender, able-bodied, christian, male, in a position of power, I’ve realized I need to stretch myself to learn about those who’ve been “othered” in their lives.
This book was smart, funny, and incredibly accessible. I truly enjoyed the author’s voice and learned so much. It’s a story for anyone who wishes to hear.
Great stuff!
