ML has issues, but he wasn't completely wrong about the FL. People pleasing is a form of manipulation, it's dishonesty with themselves, it's self neglect and a failure to be authentic with themselves as they are exploited in a bid to be accepted. FL might be a good person, but the author made people pleasing integral to her character, and it undermines her altruism.

dubious consent isn't sexy, and it still isn't in a role reversal. The female lead is obnoxious asf. I was intrigued by the premise of Mexican representation in the midwest, but God, the male lead was boring, and the female lead was a moron.

incredibly clichéd, the only reason I did not dnf is because the book had bipoc characters. I attempted to read the book and was deterred by the awkward prose, weird idioms and metaphors, and was confounded by the author's word choices. The audio book just emphasized what I had to read allowed to myself multiple times, but overall great performance from the narrator.

female lead is stupid. It's always hilarious when a female is depicted as smart, but all of her actions show she's clueless and insipid.

the narrator's voice is annoying asf. The protagonist is described one way, but her most glaring trait is pig-headedness, she reminds me of a shonen protagonist. Nevertheless, since the pov is first person, I'm calling unreliable narrator for ikenna.

Really enjoyed the overall story for the trials, don't really care for any of the characters.

The female lead is insipid. Being obstinate and lacking common sense are not favorable character traits. I spent most of the book saying "No!", "You are dumber than a box of bricks!" The voice acting, the writing, the plot, and the premise, all of it was asinine and I usually like these types of books.

I'm not particularly fond of ya, haven't been since I was a teenager. I like for my ya books to have a touch of dark humor, an unhinged quality, and overall great writing that does not revolve around the melodrama of puberty or a stupid lead character, making insipid decisions. This book is just phenomenal and exceeds my expectations.
