Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

A joy from start to finish
Revisado: 01-26-23
One of my favorite books of all time, the imaginativeness, dry humor, and sense of wonder of Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell, together with the excellent narration, brings me back to it again and again.

Interesting and entertaining as always
Revisado: 10-30-22
Daileader is probably my favorite out of dozens of Great Courses lecturers I've heard, and he's still great in this. He's perhaps a little weaker of voice and a little drier in this than his earlier Medieval courses, but also more serious and heartfelt. The facts and the speculations he presents regarding Charlemagne make for thoroughly enjoyable listening and I will definitely revisit them.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Solid Weir, with some satisfying twists
Revisado: 04-30-22
Like The Martian and Artemis, this is a story about a clever narrator character dealing with an extreme situation using science and ingenuity. Still, it's different enough but to feel like a carbon copy of those books. It's more of a sci-fi story, with some far-fetched ideas, but the plot is still consistent and "works". The narrator does a good job and the main character is a less annoying person than those of the aforementioned books. Overall, a good listen.

Historia
Imagine a world without bees, butterflies, and flowering plants. That was Earth 125 million years ago. Turn back the clock 400 million years, and there were no trees. At 450 million years in the past, even the earliest insects had not yet developed. And looking back 500 million years, the land was devoid of life, which at that time flourished in a profusion of strange forms in the oceans. These and other major turning points are the amazing story of evolution.

Didn't grab me
Revisado: 09-13-21
I don't know what it was about this course that made it leave me so cold. I usually love TGC series like this, but here my attention kept wandering and I was looking forward to finishing it.
Perhaps the narrative felt disjointed, or the lecturers relied too much on visual aids unavailable on audio. I also felt the course hurried on forward to mammals, glossing over some parts of evolution I am more interested in. It's not bad, and the lecturers were all right, but I'm probably not returning to this one.

Historia
The science fiction genre has become increasingly influential in mainstream popular culture, evolving into one of the most engaging storytelling tools we use to think about technology and consider the shape of the future. Along the way, it has also become one of the major lenses we use to explore important philosophical questions. The origins of science fiction are most often thought to trace to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, a story born from a night of spooky tale-telling by the fireside that explores scientific, moral, and ethical questions that were of great concern in the 19th century - and that continue to resonate today.

Thoroughly enjoyable and quite informative
Revisado: 08-05-21
The lecturer is cogent, clear, enthusiastic and considers issues from both sides; the subject matter is both approachable and profound; throughout, it is entertaining. One of very few courses where I felt I wouldn't mind starting it right over again once I finished.

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

A nice introduction
Revisado: 09-07-20
Though the subject matter is unquestionably fascinating, and the speaker enthusiastic and pleasant enough to listen to, I found this course unusually confusing - perhaps due to the large amount of unfamiliar names of places and peoples, and I had a hard time getting the big picture narrative. There is also a very large number of jarring sound edits (perhaps due to updates in the state of knowledge of this evolving area of science)

The quest to understand the mind has motivated some of history's most profound thinkers. But only in our own time are we beginning to see the true complexity of this quest, as today's philosophers draw on the latest evidence from neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and other fields to probe deeply into the inner workings of the mind.

Stellar Course!
- De Douglas en 08-25-13
Fascinating from beginning to end
Revisado: 07-22-20
An excellent tour of the philosophy of mind and its related sciences that manages to both cover most of the various approaches and issues off the field while still getting fairly deep into specifics. The lecturer is both engaging and objective and systematically states the arguments for and against each theory and position discussed; he explains the when and the who without getting needlessly biographical.
A great listen that I plan to repeat in the future.

Stephen Fry brings the richness of these magical stories to life in the original British recordings. The Triwizard Tournament is to be held at Hogwarts. Only wizards who are over seventeen are allowed to enter - but that doesn't stop Harry dreaming that he will win the competition. Then at Hallowe'en, when the Goblet of Fire makes its selection, Harry is amazed to find his name is one of those that the magical cup picks out. He will face death-defying tasks, dragons and Dark wizards, but with the help of his best friends, Ron and Hermione, he might just make it through - alive!

Stephen Fry as always does a great job performing this book, though it is one of the weakest of the series. The plot is sluggish and has glaring holes and the main characters' behavior is irrational and annoying.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to coexist peacefully as equals, without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. Grand in scope, but a little too slow
Revisado: 08-24-19
This series finale throws the reader for curve ball after curve ball, becoming grander and grander in scope until the very end, on a level reminiscent of Olaf Stapledon. It's exciting and even heart-wrenching at times - but for all that, it feels to long. The book goes on for a long time after its dramatic climax and even though it still surprises, its pace slackens and it feels like a slog.
The narrator is okay but I find his emoting annoying and his characterizations so-so. Still, by all means get this book of you have read the preceding ones and wish to bring it to its conclusion.
