Historia
Fourteen-year-old Ozzy lives near Portland, Oregon, and is desperate for help. His scientist parents have been kidnapped after discovering a formula that enables mind control. Their work was so top secret that Ozzy is afraid to go to the police, but without help, he fears he'll never find his parents. Then he stumbles across a classified ad in the local newspaper that says "Wizard for Hire. Call 555-SPEL." Ozzy has read about wizards in books like Harry Potter, but wizards couldn't exist today, could they? After Ozzy meets the wizard Labyrinth - a.k.a. Rin - he's even more skeptical.

Annoying
Revisado: 05-11-24
TECHNICAL: The recording was well made. Miced well, no mouth noises, or breathing sounds were noticeable.
VOICE ACTING: Particularly bad. What was with the choice to scream loudly, and I mean rip the ear buds from your ears loud. The dramatization was grade school directed by the janitor quality.
AUTHOR CRAFT: The characters were inconsistent, but I was still drawn to Ozzie because of the strength and courage in the early parts of the story. The plot was otherwise klunky. Dialog was written poorly. I wish I had the time back.

Couldn't force myself to listen to it.
Revisado: 12-26-21
Simply no redeeming element to it. Slow tedious narration. No apparent plot. And someone made the serious error of inserting music. And if that wasn't bad enough, the music was not appropriate to content.

Historia
The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of airships and steam engines, of unusual animals and mysterious machines. Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.

Revisado: 09-14-20
I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Life is just too short to read something that doesn't give you that feeling of how I want the next page on the next page. The plot was dull, tedious and uninspired. I didn't care for the characters. I didn't think the dialog was well-written.

Enjoyed it, but wouldn’t listen to it again.
Revisado: 06-02-16
TECHNICAL: Well done technically No music added, no audible mouth sounds, swallowing, digestive or breathing noises. The latter being important features for me.
PERFORMANCE: I liked the performance overall. Some problems with voice consistency, and not a great range, but still quite enjoyable.
STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: A good start presented here. Liked the main character, some of the support characters were a bit of a stretch and somewhat two dimensional. Colorful language very descriptive; sound writing skills. I could have done with less profanity, it seemed to often be gratuitous.

OK plot, terrible voice acting, really bad dialog
Revisado: 06-02-16
TECHNICAL: No obnoxious problems with audio.
PERFORMANCE: Just plain bad. I remember 4th graders reading with more life and fluidity.
STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: It had a good plot. Good enough for me to listen to the whole thing in spite of the poor reading of the performer, lack luster storytelling and the worst dialog I think I’ve heard in a professionally published work.

Not an audio book, it’s got bad music and effects.
Revisado: 06-02-16
TECHNICAL: No notable sound quality problems. But the title has constant background ‘music’ and effects that are atrocious.
PERFORMANCE: Didn’t like his voice. Performance was ripe with terrible over acting.
STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: Life is short; discontinued after 5 minutes as it would have been 14+hours I’d never get back. So very glad it was a bargain bin offering.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Very well written as one would expect
Revisado: 04-09-16
TECHNICAL: Well done technically, minimal music added, no audible mouth sounds, swallowing, digestive or breathing noises; things that ruin the listening experience for me.
PERFORMANCE: Kate Reading is my favorite female narrator. I never grow tired of her. It could be in part that she chooses her projects carefully. When I see she is reading it, I’ll consider the title even if it falls below 4 stars. Her voice is pleasant. She does a great job of characterizations; consistent across ~50 hours in this title.
STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: I like Anne Rice’s headspace. Her plots flow well, and are interesting throughout. Even with ~50 hours of story I was still interested and wanted more. She gives great dialog. And the non-dialog narrative is strong and avoids tedium that such devices can bring. So far, I’ve always finished wanting more.

I wish they would label things as young adult.
Revisado: 04-09-16
TECHNICAL: Invisible as it should be.
PERFORMANCE: It was OK. I didn’t really find the characterizations as particularly listenable. (Maybe it was partially the fault of the dialog.) Still; consistent, clear diction helped the performance.
STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: It was OK. It had a young adult twang to it. (JK Rollins books managed to not have that kind of feel.) The dialog was somewhat stilted. Story line was a bit slow. I have no desire to go any further into the series. But I didn’t hate it.
