Pure joy

The book reading scene had me in stitches.
I absolutely adore this series maybe because I have worked in a nursing home when I was very young or because I had a set of brilliantly clever grandparents. My deepest thanks to the author.

Many giggles, great (uplifting?) murder mystery

I don’t know how he did. I laughed and smirked my way through the book. It was a pleasure from cover to cover. This is the book we need. It was a crime novel with some detective work, but somehow it was something more and I feel a little more love for my fellow humans. I have never read anything that was something clever and funny without feeling like it was trying to I wish so much that I could have read this with my grandfather. This made me miss him and feel close to him at the same time. Thank you so very much. I am looking forward to every page to follow.

Mystery with lots of subtle humor

The narration is excellent. The writing is fun and suspenseful with many humorous subtleties. I look forward to reading the author’s other series.

About three times as long as it needed to be
Revisado: 05-29-24
I worked in the fields of exposomics and ecotoxicology. I love the subject matter, but this was repetitive to the point of silliness. It is a great, informative book ruined by the constant, intrusive mental urging of the author to get on to the next point. There are many, many extra words that add nothing to the quality of the information. I couldn’t help but think the author compensation must be pay-by-the-word.
That said. This is a great book for people to understand the sum total of exposures that affect our health (and our pet’s health).

This scope is narrow
Revisado: 05-14-24
This scope of this book is very narrow. It does not really cover the daily life of the Cherokee in an engaging or thorough way and mostly focuses on land conflicts and extirpation. While that is interesting, it wasn’t the hoped for content. It is an emotional and tragic dislocation, but you don’t get to know the Cherokee so it isn’t gripping as it should be. Narrator is a granddaughter of author which is very cool, but narration was not as strong as it could have been. Overall, flat story read in a way that doesn’t make it more compelling.

Historia
Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they're practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. In Crossings, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb travels throughout the United States and around the world to investigate how roads have transformed our planet. A million animals are killed by cars each day in the US alone, but as the new science of road ecology shows, the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill.

Something new to think about
Revisado: 05-13-24
I really enjoyed the introduction to road ecology, wildlife crossings, the challenges of roadkill data collection, and the stories roadkill analysis can tell.
I thought the book was organized thoughtfully and this made it listen more like an educational story.
I will never look at roadkill, median barriers, or culverts the same!

So good! Ecology. Ghost story. Nostalgia.
Revisado: 05-09-24
This is the most unique collection of stories. The chapters follow the progression of tenants of a cabin in the north woods. This chapters read as short stories with tendrils of relation until the book comes full circle. Much of it appealed to my twinhood and my love of ecology and entomology! The author gave us a book with such a sense of awareness of its own setting and characters. No complaints!

Historia
In her debut memoir Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey, Woniya shares how months of starving by herself in the Arctic wilderness brought more healing than suffering, and led to a deep sense of belonging and peace. Her story affirms the incredible strength of the human spirit and shows us that strength comes in many surprising forms. Never Alone's message is one of inspiration and learning to trust in ourselves and the land around us; embracing the wild and being wholly and beautifully human, flaws and all.

Revisado: 05-03-24
It’s got some hippy, crunchy, spiritual vibes. It is more memoir than adventure. I enjoyed the book and I thought the reading was exceptionally well done for an author. Her accomplishments are impressive! I will read the sequel.

Historia
No stranger to wildlife, Nick Jans had lived in Alaska for nearly 30 years. But when one evening at twilight a lone black wolf ambled into view not far from his doorstep, Nick would finally come to know this mystical species - up close as never before. A Wolf Called Romeo is the remarkable story of a wolf who returned again and again to interact with the people and dogs of Juneau, living on the edges of their community, engaging in an improbable, awe-inspiring interspecies dance and bringing the wild into sharp focus.

Insider accounting of the story of Romeo
Revisado: 04-09-24
I appreciated Jans’ telling of Romeo’s story and his efforts to dispel the myths about American predators. One of our darkest acts as a nation is the efforts to eradicate apex predators (poisons, traps, biological warfare). The brutality is almost unimaginable. The book is also about the people (and dogs) involved with the wolf and I do appreciate Jans’ restraint in his own interactions. It is always a struggle to want to engage with wild animals, but to know it is to their detriment. As a nature and dog lover, the senseless loss of this unique creature is heartbreaking. If you enjoyed this book, I recommend The Rise of Wolf 8.

I’m an outlier
Revisado: 10-18-23
This is one of the shortest books I have purchased, but it took me twice as long to finish. The lack of engagement forced me to listen to whole chapters a second time. This is highly irregular for me. I did not care about a single character. I found the plot predictable. I am glad it is over!
