Three of the people on the list are dead. The fourth is Ben Koenig. Koenig has no idea why his name is on the list. Then he realizes that he knows the woman who carried out the killings. Ten years earlier, without being told why, he was tasked with helping her disappear.

A bad ending ruins the book
Revisado: 12-29-24
The climax of the book, when the “bad guy” is finally confronted, is monumentally stupid. It is only eclipsed by an even more ridiculous set-up for the next book in the series. Count me OUT.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Not quite a thumbs-up
Revisado: 06-15-23
Story of HMS Wager is an interesting true tale of shipwreck, survival and mutiny. Meticulously researched, it relates the incredible capacity men have to survive in extreme peril and despite the savagery of Mother Nature. However the book is dry in parts, unnecessarily dramatic in parts, and devolves into 21st century wokeness in parts. Initially claiming to relate the story in a way that “let’s the reader” decide whether the mutiny was justified, the author frequently chooses sides by inserting praising, or inflammatory adjectives to describe (more accurately ascribe) the actions taken by the men.
Ultimately, by straying from the tale and injecting his judgments proved distracting.
The narrator was far too histrionic for my tastes.

Everything he learned to protect the president, he must use to take out theirs. With an American president distracted by growing tensions in North Korea and Iran, an ominous new threat is emerging in Moscow. A czar is rising in the Kremlin, a Russian president feverishly consolidating power, silencing his opposition, and plotting a brazen and lightning-fast military strike that could rupture the NATO alliance and bring Washington and Moscow to the brink of nuclear war. But in his blind spot is the former U.S. Secret Service agent, Marcus Ryker.

Boring, boring, boring
Revisado: 07-01-21
My advice: Don’t buy this book. The plot is silly, the writing stiff and the level of originality is near zero. More than a third of the book is useless history in which the author tries to set the scene, but fails to generate any interest. And it gets no better from there.

Revisado: 01-27-21
Fans of Spaceside and Planetside will be delighted that Butler is back for another adventure in which his unique skills, dead-pan humor, and band of associates are tasked to unravel a mysterious disappearance on a colony far away. The performance is excellent and the story is another good one. Enjoy

Historia
All across Europe, the most ruthless criminals are suffering gruesome deaths. At first, it seems coincidental that their underworld affiliations are finally catching up to them. But when two of the victims are found to have disturbing connections to Detective Joona Linna, it becomes clear that there’s a single killer at work. Still, police are reluctant to launch an investigation. If a mysterious vigilante is making their jobs easier, why stand in his way?

Electric Thriller
Revisado: 12-23-20
Joona Linna is back, and he is matched against the only man who scares him to his core, notorious serial killer Jurek Walter. Years ago, Joona sent his wife and daughter into hiding to escape Walter, and now, risen like Lazarus, Walter is back, and death and terror are with him.
This is a Thriller with a capital “T.” Intensely gripping, sometimes even cruel, the dynamic writing duo that is behind Lars Kepler have penned a non-stop action ride to catch one of the most devious killers of all time - Walter makes Hannibal Lecter seem like a lamb.
This book is at the top of its class. And the performance is stupendous. You will be all-in until you realize you don’t want the ride to end.

Silly story despite top-notch performance
Revisado: 12-02-20
Sadly, this is just a bad story. It is simplistic, even silly. It has a plot that just panders to cliches. I was taken in by reviews which promised that the story was a “thriller” and had “great plot twists.” Instead, the author (who has talent) just writes a dud. A boring, too long, predictable and silly tale of the dangers of automated vehicles.
I will say that the performances, with many different narrators, was excellent. It is a shame, a darn shame, the book failed.

Fabulous
Revisado: 08-19-20
Should be required reading (or listening) for every student of history. By telling the story as it unfolded, we get a sense of the actual events, and not a preconceived notion of an author trying to “interpret” history and make the events fit the narrative. That said, Wallace explores the ramifications of using the atomic bomb from the people who actually developed and deployed it, along with those who were involved in the decision to use it against Japan.

Historia
Less than 40 years after England's golden age under Elizabeth I, the country was at war with itself. Split between loyalty to the Crown or to Parliament, war raged on English soil. Its casualties were immense. At the head of the disintegrating kingdom was King Charles I. In this vivid portrait - informed by previously unseen manuscripts, including royal correspondence between the king and his queen - Leanda de Lisle depicts a man who was principled and brave but fatally blinkered.

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."
