Historia
Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

Good story
Revisado: 11-16-24
I liked the story and the surprises that came up. I'm a fan of the narrator who read Martha, and the ones who read Ethan and Richard were good. Listening to the narrator who read Lily, and who makes up most of the book, was rough. She sounded like she was reading, and not acting, like the others were doing. And the one who read Alan was a little reader-y too, but his part was short. Good story, though.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Delightful
Revisado: 08-13-24
That's the only word that I can come up with that comes close to describing how much I enjoyed this book: delightful. Every part of it -- the writing, the story line, the historical touches, the narration -- all of if was just so good that I'm sad that it has to come to an end.

Revisado: 05-04-24
We do love a twist... or three. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, and then was proved right, I started to become more and more wrong. I never would have seen any of that coming. Well done! The narrator was ok but I definitely did not buy her as a millennial.

Cake.
Revisado: 01-28-24
The story is good, and the narrators delivered it well. I found myself rooting for the three main characters, and there were quite a few surprises thrown in there.
I found myself annoyed at the way Koontz used unnecessarily big or even just formal words that nobody would ever use in conversation. Do you know anyone who refers to their seatbelt as a safety harness? And for someone who insists on writing in such a way, you'd think he's find another word for "evidently." Maybe Shep can help with that.

Great story, and some nice surprises here and there. The narrator did a great job too, but could someone please tell him how to correctly say "dilapidated?" There's only one t in that word.

Historia
Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early 20th century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place", he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious".

This book was such a fun read. It goes back and forth between a historical mystery and a present day one, and there are so many twists and turns, I couldn't figure out who did "it." And the cliffhanger ensures I'm already on to book 2. Kate Rudd's narration is perfection!

My bad, but UGGGGGH
Revisado: 12-03-23
It was absolutely my fault that, when I saw Lisa Gardner's name, I didn't think to see if the pseudonym meant a different genre. I'm more of a Detective Sargent D.D. Warren kind of girl than a 27-year-old virgin falling in desperate love with her captor in one day type. However, Kate Rudd's narration was outstanding. She's got kind of an Audrey Hepburn thing going on, and she delivered all the different character voices so well. I'm off to find more books she's voiced (and hope they're not all romance. Ugh.

Meh.
Revisado: 11-30-23
I wanted so badly to love this. The story was interesting, although I hated the ending. But I like that it moved quickly. The narrator is bright and cheerful sounding, but her odd inflections and pauses, especially every time there was a "she said" or "I said," etc, made it hard to push through. Some of her character voices were good, and others were so indistinguishable from each other, it made it impossible to figure out which person is speaking in a conversation. That may have affected my enjoyment of the story.

I really liked it. While it was slightly predictable, it did have some unexpected twists and some exciting moments. I recommended it to my friends as soon as I finished. Great job by the narrator, too, who I fully believed was a college student, and who kept things moving at just the right pace.

Absurdly bad narration
Revisado: 10-05-23
I never feel good about trashing someone's art, but... was this narrated by A.I.? Because it's truly awful. The female voice reminds me of Stuart"s mom on Mad TV. And then almost 40 chapters in, there's randomly a male narrator with equally poor inflection and acting skills voicing characters already voiced by the female narrator earlier. like, it's just bizarre.
